About Kung Fu Panda Movie

Kung Fu Panda is an American animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Serving as the first installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, the film was directed by John Stevenson and Mark Osborne, with a screenplay by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, and a story developed by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. The voice cast features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Randall Duk Kim, James Hong, and Jackie Chan.

Before the film’s development, DreamWorks Animation had previously explored a similar martial arts-themed concept with the 1999 PlayStation game T’ai Fu: Wrath of the Tiger, created under its former video game division, DreamWorks Interactive (now Danger Close Games). In early 2004, DreamWorks considered adapting The White Seal by Rudyard Kipling, with composer Eric Whitacre working on The Seal Lullaby for the project. However, the studio ultimately shelved that idea and shifted its focus to Kung Fu Panda, with public development beginning in October 2004.

In September 2005, DreamWorks officially announced the film, confirming Jack Black as the lead voice actor. The concept originated from DreamWorks executive Michael Lachance, initially envisioned as a parody. However, co-director John Stevenson preferred a more character-driven wuxia comedy, shaping the film into an action-packed yet heartfelt story.

Following the success of Kung Fu Panda, DreamWorks Animation moved forward with a sequel. Kung Fu Panda 2 outperformed its predecessor at the box office and received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. The franchise continued with Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016, which became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The fourth installment, Kung Fu Panda 4, was released on March 8, 2024.

A manga adaptation of Kung Fu Panda was released in Japan in the September 2008 issue of Kerokero Ace magazine. Written by Hanten Okuma and illustrated by Takafumi Adachi, the manga expanded on the film’s storyline.

The franchise later expanded into television, starting with Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, which premiered on Nickelodeon on September 19, 2011. Lucy Liu and James Hong were the only original cast members to reprise their roles as Master Viper and Mr. Ping. The series ran for three seasons, concluding on June 29, 2016, in the United States, though its final episodes aired earlier in Germany between December 30, 2014, and January 7, 2015.

The second animated series, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny, debuted on Amazon Prime Video on November 16, 2018. It followed the events of Kung Fu Panda 3, with Mick Wingert voicing Po, reprising his role from Legends of Awesomeness.

A third television series, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, premiered on Netflix in July 2022, featuring Jack Black’s return as Po.

Additionally, a holiday special titled Kung Fu Panda Holiday aired on NBC on November 24, 2010, bringing a festive spin to the franchise.

Kung Fu Panda Movie Release Date

To promote the film’s Japanese release, a manga based on the story was released in Japan in the September 2008 issue of Kerokero Ace magazine. The illustrations were done by Takafumi Adachi.
