About Kung Fu Panda 3 Movie
Kung Fu Panda 3 is an animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation, China Film Group Corporation, Oriental DreamWorks, and Zhong Ming You Ying Film, with distribution by 20th Century Fox. It serves as the third installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and a sequel to Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011). Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, the film was written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.
Returning voice cast members include Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross, and James Hong, with Randall Duk Kim reprising his role as Oogway from the first film. New additions include Bryan Cranston (replacing Fred Tatasciore as Master Bear), J.K. Simmons, and Kate Hudson.
In 2010, DreamWorks Animation (DWA) CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed plans for six total Kung Fu Panda films. Kung Fu Panda 3 was officially announced in July 2012 by Bill Damaschke, DWA’s chief creative officer.
The film was a co-production between DreamWorks Animation and Oriental DreamWorks, a Shanghai-based studio formed in 2012 as a joint venture between DreamWorks and Chinese companies. This marked the first time a major American animated feature film was co-produced with a Chinese firm. Approximately one-third of the animation was completed in China, while the rest was produced in the United States at DWA.
By securing co-production status in China, the film was able to bypass the country’s strict import quotas and gain a higher share of box-office revenue compared to foreign imports. To ensure cultural authenticity and appeal to Chinese audiences, DreamWorks worked closely with SAPPRFT (State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television). Additionally, the film was uniquely animated with two versions—one in English and one in Chinese—where the characters’ lip movements were synchronized with the respective languages.
Following Kung Fu Panda 3, the franchise continued with Kung Fu Panda 4, released on March 8, 2024.
Kung Fu Panda 3 Movie Release Date
In September 2012, Kung Fu Panda 3 was initially scheduled for release on March 18, 2016. However, on April 9, 2013, the release date was moved up to December 23, 2015. In December 2014, the film was rescheduled back to March 18, 2016, to avoid competition with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The final adjustment came in April 2015, when the release date was shifted again to January 29, 2016.
AMC Theatres collaborated with Fox and DreamWorks Animation to offer Kung Fu Panda 3 in multiple languages, presenting Mandarin screenings in seven theaters and Spanish screenings in 14 locations across the U.S. and Canada. This marked AMC’s first time showcasing a major theatrical release in Mandarin.
The film had a staggered global release, premiering in South Korea, Russia, Ukraine, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and China on January 28, 2016, followed by its U.S. and Canada release on January 29. Other international markets received the film throughout March and April. According to Deadline Hollywood, this strategic rollout was designed to capitalize on key market opportunities, such as aligning the film’s release with the Chinese New Year in February for China.
