About Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie
Kung Fu Panda 2 is an American animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, it serves as the sequel to Kung Fu Panda (2008) and the second installment in the franchise.
The film features the return of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, and Jackie Chan, with newcomers Gary Oldman, Michelle Yeoh, Danny McBride, Dennis Haysbert, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Victor Garber joining the cast.
Following the success of Kung Fu Panda, DreamWorks initially planned the sequel under the working titles Pandamonium and later Kaboom of Doom, before finalizing Kung Fu Panda 2 by 2010. Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who served as head of story on the first film, took over as director when original directors John Stevenson and Mark Osborne did not return. As with all DreamWorks films from Monsters vs. Aliens onward, the sequel was produced using the studio’s stereoscopic 3D technology.
Aibel and Berger returned as screenwriters and co-producers, with early screenplay consultations from Charlie Kaufman. For Kung Fu Panda 2, the production team delved deeper into Chinese culture. After the first film’s release, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, director Nelson, and the design team visited Chengdu, home to the Giant Panda Research Centre, to study real pandas and immerse themselves in the region’s culture. Their experiences, including interacting with a baby panda, inspired elements such as Po’s childhood flashback. The film’s setting drew influence from Mount Qingcheng, a significant Taoist site, while traditional Sichuan cuisine, including Mapo tofu and Dandan noodles, was incorporated into the story.
To market the film, DreamWorks Animation secured $100 million in promotional partnerships with major brands like McDonald’s, AT&T, Best Buy, General Mills, Sun-Maid, Airheads, Hint Water, and HP. The studio also collaborated with House Foods America to brand its tofu products—marking the first-ever partnership between a film studio and a tofu company.
Po’s character was heavily featured in advertisements and merchandise, including toys from Fisher-Price, video games by THQ, and books from Penguin Books, Dalmatian Press, and VTech. Additionally, a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon of Po toured six cities, culminating in Los Angeles during Memorial Day weekend in May 2011.
Kung Fu Panda 2 was followed by Kung Fu Panda 3, which became one of the highest-grossing animated films of 2016. The franchise continued with Kung Fu Panda 4, released on March 8, 2024.
Kung Fu Panda 2 Release Date
Kung Fu Panda 2 was screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in early May, before its commercial release. In the United States, it premiered on May 22, 2011, at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. The film was widely released in the United States and South Korea on May 26, 2011, in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2011, and in Australia on June 23, 2011. It was also released in IMAX theaters in the EMEA region.
