About Ne Zha 2 Movie

Ne Zha 2 (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童闹海; pinyin: Nézhā zhī Mótóng Nàohǎi; also known as 哪吒2; Nézhā Èr) is a Chinese animated fantasy adventure film, serving as the sequel to Ne Zha (2019), and the third film in Enlight Pictures’ Fengshen Universe after Ne Zha and Jiang Ziya (2020). It was written and directed by Jiaozi, who also wrote and directed the first film. Like its predecessors, the film is loosely based on Chinese mythology stories and the 16th-century Chinese novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi) while also containing several creative differences.

After the success of Ne Zha (2019), the production team began planning a sequel. Director Jiaozi confirmed that a follow-up would be made if the first film performed well at the box office. Given the commercial success of Ne Zha, the sequel, titled Ne Zha: The Demon Boy Havoc in the Sea (or Ne Zha 2 in English), went into production. The production budget for the sequel increased to 600 million yuan, surpassing the previous record of 200 million yuan set by Deep Sea (2023), making it China’s most expensive animated film.

Both Ne Zha and Ne Zha 2 took five years to produce. Over 4,000 people from 138 animation companies worked on the sequel, more than double the 1,600 people who worked on the original. Producer Liu Wenzhang stated that the sequel features three times as many characters as the first film, with over 2,400 shots, including more than 1,900 special effects shots, compared to the 1,800 shots in the original.

The first trailer for Ne Zha 2 was released on 7 January 2025, followed by a second trailer on 26 January 2025.

Official merchandise and toys related to Ne Zha 2 became best-sellers across stores in China, with many reporting that the products had completely sold out. Following the film’s release, sales of Ne Zha merchandise exceeded 50 million yuan on the e-commerce platform Taobao. Within just two weeks, branded merchandise generated over 400 million yuan in sales.

In China, the film was released alongside Detective Chinatown 1900 and Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force.

Ne Zha 2 broke the record for the highest single-day gross of a Chinese animated film. By the morning after its release, its total earnings had surpassed 700 million RMB.

With over US$2 billion in earnings against a production budget of US$80 million, Ne Zha 2 shattered multiple box-office records both in China and globally. It became the highest-grossing film in a single box office territory in its domestic market, China. On the global stage, it set records as the highest-grossing animated film and the highest-grossing non-English language film. It was the first non-English language film to gross over $1 billion and $2 billion and the first animated film to reach the $2 billion milestone. Additionally, it holds the title of the highest-grossing film of 2025 and ranks as the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time.

Ne Zha 2 Release Date

Ne Zha 2 was released in Mainland China on 29 January 2025, the first day of the Chinese New Year, in various formats including 2D, 3D, IMAX, CINITY, CGS, Dolby Cinema, and more. The film debuted in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries on 13 February 2025, followed by releases in the United States and Canada on 14 February, and in Hong Kong and Macau on 22 February. As with its predecessor, the film received highly positive reviews from critics.
