Storyline

The film is based on anecdotal accounts of the working relationship between Kim Dae-jung and his political strategist Uhm Chang-rok during his political career.[5] Seo Chang-dae is a political strategist who prioritizes winning above all else, while Kim Woon-beom is a politician with ambitions to become president so that he can change the country for the better.

About Kingmaker Movie

Kingmaker (Korean: 킹메이커; Kingmeikeo) is a South Korean political drama film written and directed by Byun Sung-hyun, produced by Seed Film. It stars Sul Kyung-gu, Lee Sun-kyun, and Yoo Jae-myung.

Sul Kyung-gu joined the cast in July 2018 as a politician, while Lee Sun-kyun was cast as a political strategist. This film marks Byun Sung-hyun and Sul Kyung-gu’s second collaboration following the 2017 crime thriller The Merciless. The completed cast lineup was revealed on March 29, 2019, along with photos from the script reading session.

Byun Sung-hyun reunited with his previous collaborators for the production, including art director Han Ah-reum, composers Kim Hong-jip and Lee Jin-hee, and lighting director Lee Gil-gyu, all of whom worked on The Merciless. The film was produced with an estimated budget of ₩12 billion.

Principal photography began on March 25, 2019, and concluded on July 30, 2019.

Initially set for release on 1184 screens on December 29, 2021, the film was postponed due to a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was eventually released on January 26, 2022, coinciding with the Korean New Year holiday.

Kingmaker was officially invited to compete at the 24th Udine Far East Film Festival, held from April 22 to 30, 2022.

The film became available for streaming on various platforms, including IPTV (Olleh TV, SK Btv, LG U+TV), Home Choice, TVING, Naver TV, WAVVE, Google Play, KT Skylife, Cinefox, and KakaoPage, starting February 24, 2022.
