About Black Mirror TV Series
Black Mirror is a British psychological mystery thriller series created by Charlie Brooker. Inspired by The Twilight Zone, the series explores themes of technology and media to critique modern societal issues. Most episodes are written by Brooker, with executive producer Annabel Jones also playing a key role in its development.
The series spans multiple genres, with most episodes set in near-future dystopias featuring advanced sci-fi technology, making it a form of speculative fiction. Black Mirror consists of 27 episodes across six seasons, along with a special episode and the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018). The upcoming seventh season will include six episodes.
The title Black Mirror has a dual meaning. It references black scrying mirrors used in occult and witchcraft practices, which are believed to allow glimpses into the past, present, and future, as well as communication with spirits. Additionally, the title alludes to the dark, reflective surface of a television or computer screen when turned off, symbolizing the unsettling relationship between technology and humanity.
From the second to the third season, Black Mirror shifted from being a distinctly British show—except for Jon Hamm’s appearance in White Christmas (Season 2, Episode 4, 2014)—to featuring American actors in most leading roles. This change occurred because the first two seasons were produced by the British company Zeppotron, whereas the third, fourth, and fifth seasons were commissioned and produced by Netflix, an American company.
