Black Mirror Storyline

Featuring stand-alone dramas — sharp, suspenseful, satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia — “Black Mirror” is a contemporary reworking of “The Twilight Zone” with stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world.

About Black Mirror TV Series

Black Mirror is a British psychological mystery thriller series created by Charlie Brooker. Inspired by The Twilight Zone, the series explores themes of technology and media to critique modern societal issues. Most episodes are written by Brooker, with executive producer Annabel Jones also playing a key role in its development.

The series spans multiple genres, with most episodes set in near-future dystopias featuring advanced sci-fi technology, making it a form of speculative fiction. Black Mirror consists of 27 episodes across six seasons, along with a special episode and the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018). The upcoming seventh season will include six episodes.

The title Black Mirror has a dual meaning. It references black scrying mirrors used in occult and witchcraft practices, which are believed to allow glimpses into the past, present, and future, as well as communication with spirits. Additionally, the title alludes to the dark, reflective surface of a television or computer screen when turned off, symbolizing the unsettling relationship between technology and humanity.

From the second to the third season, Black Mirror shifted from being a distinctly British show—except for Jon Hamm’s appearance in White Christmas (Season 2, Episode 4, 2014)—to featuring American actors in most leading roles. This change occurred because the first two seasons were produced by the British company Zeppotron, whereas the third, fourth, and fifth seasons were commissioned and produced by Netflix, an American company.

The first two seasons of Black Mirror aired on the British network Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, followed by the 2014 special White Christmas. The series then transitioned to Netflix, where four more seasons were released in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2023. A seventh season premiered on Netflix on April 10, 2025. Additionally, Netflix produced two related webisode series, and in 2018, the companion book Inside Black Mirror was published, covering the first four seasons.

In November 2012, Black Mirror won Best TV Movie/Miniseries at the International Emmy Awards. Bryce Dallas Howard earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance in the episode Nosedive. At the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series received three nominations and won two, including Outstanding Television Movie for San Junipero. In 2018, USS Callister won three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Television Movie, and received four nominations. In 2019, Bandersnatch secured two Emmy wins, including Outstanding Television Movie, marking Black Mirror’s third consecutive victory in that category.
