Peacemaker (Season 1) Storyline

Picking up where The Suicide Squad (2021) left off, Peacemaker returns home after recovering from his encounter with Bloodsport – only to discover that his freedom comes at a price.

About Peacemaker Season 1 TV Series

The first season of the American superhero television series Peacemaker is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is the only television series in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad.

It was produced by the Safran Company and Troll Court Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and with James Gunn as showrunner.

John Cena stars as the title character, reprising his role from The Suicide Squad, with Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick also starring. Gunn conceived the series after noting Cena’s strength as a dramatic actor while filming The Suicide Squad, and wrote all eight episodes while completing the film during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peacemaker Development

  • Gunn, a writer and director, began writing a spin-off television series based on the origins of Peacemaker, a character from The Suicide Squad.
  • The idea was discussed with producer Peter Safran during the COVID-19 lockdown.
  • DC Films approached Safran about developing a spin-off series based on The Suicide Squad.
  • Initial discussions included HBO and HBO Max, but HBO Max was chosen due to its content and budget.
  • HBO Max ordered Peacemaker in September 2020, with Gunn writing all eight episodes and directing five.
  • The season was produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and the Safran Company in conjunction with Warner Bros. Television. Matt Miller joined as an additional executive producer in December.
  • The Suicide Squad’s filming led to Gunn’s realization of Cena’s potential as a dramatic actor.
  • Gunn felt the character of Peacemaker had been underdeveloped in the series.
  • He decided to write a television series starring Peacemaker, leveraging his film script writing experience and television series knowledge.
  • The series was inspired by Better Call Saul (2015–2022), drawing parallels between the protagonist and Peacemaker.
  • The first season was written in eight weeks, focusing on the opening hospital scene and the opening title sequence.
  • The series explored current world issues and the character’s relationship with his father.
  • The story revolved around Peacemaker coming to terms with his identity based on childhood trauma and his father’s treatment.
  • The series was a redemption story, with the villains aiming to save humanity from its “anti-science” mindset and populist leaders.
  • The “anti-science” line was a reference to climate change deniers rather than anti-vaxxers.
  • Post-credits scenes were added to each episode to reward fans who watched full credits.
  • HBO Max noted graphic violence and profanity in the series.
  • Concerns were raised about the use of “fuck” and a specific moment in the sixth episode.
  • Questions were raised about references to characters like Bat-Mite, now part of the DCEU.
  • Gunn acknowledged these questions but was able to make desired references without specific connections to other projects.
  • A character from the series was mentioned for an upcoming DCEU film.
  • The fourth episode references Black Adam events in Kahndaq.
  • Justice League members made cameo appearances in the season finale, causing Warner Bros. concerns.

Peacemaker Casting

  • John Cena, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, and Chris Conrad were confirmed to reprise their roles in the series.
  • Chukwudi Iwuji joined the cast as Clemson Murn in December.
  • Lochlyn Munro was cast as Larry Fitzgibbon, Annie Chang as Detective Sophie Song, and Christopher Heyerdahl as Captain Locke.
  • Elizabeth Ludlow, Rizwan Manji, Nhut Le, Alison Araya, and Lenny Jacobson were cast in February 2021.
  • Freddie Stroma replaced Conrad as Adrian Chase / Vigilante in May after Conrad left due to creative differences.
  • Viola Davis reprised her DCEU role as Amanda Waller.
  • Dee Bradley Baker voiced Peacemaker’s pet bald eagle, Eagly, and Ratcatcher 2’s pet rat Sebastian.
  • Stephen Blackehart voiced the possessed gorilla Charlie.
  • The Justice League actors, except Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, were not expected to reprise their roles.
  • Other Justice League members were portrayed by body doubles. Warner Bros. later asked for Batman and Cyborg to be removed due to planned DCEU projects.

Peacemaker Filming

Production of “The Scriptures”

  • Filming began on January 15, 2021, in Vancouver, Canada, under the working title The Scriptures.
  • Michael Bonvillain served as cinematographer.
  • Vancouver was chosen for its Pacific Northwest setting and safer pandemic management.
  • Five episodes were directed by Gunn, with Jody Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez, and Brad Anderson each directing one.
  • The first scene was filmed in Los Angeles, setting up the beginning of “Peacemaker.”
  • The first five episodes were filmed first, with the last three episodes filmed simultaneously.
  • The sixth episode was filmed last due to its personal significance.
  • Filming for the first seven episodes took 12 to 15 days each, and the finale took 21 or 22 days due to night shooting.
  • Production lasted 131 days, wrapping on July 11.
  • Gunn later filmed Miller’s cameo as the Flash on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a favor to DC.
  • The dance sequence was written by Gunn to be funny and different from other superhero television series.
  • The sequence was described as the “greatest opening credits scene of all time” and “the weirdest dance you’ve ever seen”.
  • The sequence was filmed in a high school auditorium, featuring the main cast and guest stars.
  • The dance sequence was adapted from a 1970s variety show set to a more 1980s design.
  • Choreographer Charissa-Lee Barton was hired to help plan the sequence, who was later married to actor Alan Tudyk.
  • Sarofsky provided the typography for the Peacemaker opening sequence, incorporating the series’ hair metal soundtrack.
  • The font New Zelek was chosen for its angular, geometric feel and clear, familiar letterforms.
  • Each episode begins with a recap, including the first one of The Suicide Squad.
  • The recap includes a deleted moment, Flo Crawley, explaining why the character was not part of the team.
  • Sarofsky applied the same title treatment to the opening sequence and episode titles.
  • After struggling with King Shark, Weta Digital provided visual effects for Eagly for Peacemaker.
  • The series’ camera crew often needed to be digitally removed from the reflections on Peacemaker’s helmet.
