About Moana 2 Movie
Moana 2, the sequel to Moana (2016), is the second installment in the franchise.
In December 2020, during Disney Investor Day, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer Jennifer Lee announced a long-form musical comedy series titled Moana: The Series, set for release on Disney+ in 2023.
In February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the series had been reworked into a theatrical sequel, Moana 2, with Derrick and Shurer still attached. By the first trailer’s release in May, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller were announced as co-directors alongside Derrick, while Christina Chen and Yvett Merino replaced Shurer as producers.
Animation began at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Vancouver studio when the project was still planned as a series, while pre-production and storyboarding were conducted at the Burbank studio. Moana 2 marks the Vancouver studio’s first feature film, though Iwájú was released earlier in the year.
It is the sixth Disney animated film scored by Mark Mancina, after Tarzan (1999), Brother Bear (2003), Planes (2013), Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014), and Moana (2016).
John Musker, Ron Clements, Don Hall, and Chris Williams, who directed Moana (2016), did not return to helm the sequel.
The first trailer premiered on May 29, 2024, following its CinemaCon debut in April, amassing over 178 million views within 24 hours and breaking the record for the most-watched trailer for a Disney animated film. A sneak peek was shown at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 14. On August 9, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson promoted the film at the D23 Expo, where a new trailer was released online.
Like the first movie, Moana 2 was released in European countries with the title and protagonist’s name changed to Vaiana due to a trademark conflict.
Moana 2 was released in the United States on November 27, 2024, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences.
This is the first sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios since Frozen II (2019).
It is projected to earn $105–115 million domestically over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, potentially setting a new holiday box office record, surpassing Frozen (2013).
