About Kung Fu Panda 4 Movie
Kung Fu Panda 4 is an American animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. Serving as the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and a sequel to Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016), the film is directed by Mike Mitchell, co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, and written by Darren Lemke alongside Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Rebecca Huntley serves as producer.
Jack Black, Ian McShane, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, and Bryan Cranston reprise their roles, while Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, Lori Tan Chinn, and Viola Davis join the cast as new characters.
Talks about a fourth installment began before Kung Fu Panda 3’s release in 2016, with director Jennifer Yuh Nelson expressing openness to a sequel in 2018. DreamWorks officially announced Kung Fu Panda 4 in August 2022, with Mitchell, Ma Stine, and Huntley attached by April 2023. Most of the returning cast and new additions were revealed in December 2023, following Awkwafina’s casting in May. Lemke’s involvement was confirmed in February 2024.
Hans Zimmer, who composed the previous three films—collaborating with John Powell on the first two—returned to score the film alongside Steve Mazzaro. Jellyfish Pictures contributed additional production assets. The fight sequences were enhanced with advanced animation techniques and drew inspiration from anime, with stunt performers from Marvel films providing motion references. The Chameleon, the film’s main antagonist, was one of DreamWorks’ most complex animated characters, featuring 8,130 individual controls.
Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Wild Robot were the last films to be fully produced in-house at DreamWorks Animation before the studio’s shift toward external collaborations.
To promote the film, Po made an appearance at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 2023. The official trailer, released on December 13, 2023, featured The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and quickly became the most-viewed trailer for a Universal animated film, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Sing 2, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, amassing over 142 million views within 24 hours across all platforms.
In May 2024, following the critical and commercial success of Kung Fu Panda 4, Mitchell suggested that a fifth film could happen, but it would likely not be until at least 2027 due to the lengthy production process.
