Early Life & Education

Hrithik Roshan was born on 10 January 1974 in Bombay into the Roshan family, which has deep roots in Hindi cinema. He is of Punjabi and Bengali descent through his father, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, the son of music director Roshanlal Nagrath. His mother, Pinkie, is the daughter of filmmaker J. Om Prakash. His uncle, Rajesh Roshan, is a renowned music composer, and his cousin, Pashmina Roshan, is an actress. Raised in a Hindu family, Roshan considers himself more spiritual than religious. He studied at Bombay Scottish School and later graduated in commerce from Sydenham College, where he participated in dance and music festivals.
As a child, Roshan faced challenges due to a congenital extra thumb on his right hand and a stammer that developed at age six, leading to isolation and struggles in school. He underwent daily speech therapy to overcome his speech issues. His on-screen journey began at age six when his grandfather, J. Om Prakash, cast him in Aasha (1980), for which he received ₹100. He later made uncredited appearances in family films and had his first speaking role at 12 in Bhagwaan Dada (1986).
Despite aspiring to be an actor, his father insisted he prioritize education. In his early 20s, Roshan was diagnosed with scoliosis, which doctors claimed would prevent him from dancing or performing stunts. However, a transformative moment came when he ran in the rain without pain, boosting his confidence and strengthening his resolve to pursue acting.
Roshan gained industry experience by assisting his father on films like Khudgarz (1987), King Uncle (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), and Koyla (1997), performing various tasks from sweeping floors to making tea. He also studied acting under Kishore Namit Kapoor and practiced scenes from Koyla, recording himself to refine his craft.
Career
Hrithik Roshan was initially set to debut in Shekhar Kapur’s shelved film Tara Rum Pum Pum opposite Preity Zinta. Instead, he made his breakthrough in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), directed by his father, Rakesh Roshan. Playing dual roles, he trained extensively in acting, dance, and fitness. The film became a massive box-office hit, earning ₹800 million globally and making him the first actor to win both the Filmfare Best Debut and Best Actor awards in the same year. However, Roshan found it challenging to adjust to sudden fame.
That same year, he expanded his repertoire with Fiza, playing a young man drawn into terrorism, earning critical acclaim and a Filmfare nomination. He followed it with Mission Kashmir, a hit that explored terrorism in Kashmir, where his performance was praised for its depth.
In 2001, he starred in Yaadein, which was poorly received, but bounced back with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, a major success that became India’s highest-grossing film of the year. His performance as Rohan Raichand earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
However, the following years saw a series of box-office failures, including Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (2002), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002), and Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002), despite international earnings. His career faced setbacks, with critics branding him a “one-trick pony” after the failure of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003), leading to doubts about his future in Bollywood.
Hrithik Roshan’s career resurgence began with Koi… Mil Gaya (2003), in which he played Rohit Mehra, a developmentally disabled man who befriends an extraterrestrial. Losing nearly 8 kg for the role, he embraced the character wholeheartedly. While some critics compared the film to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Roshan’s performance was widely praised, earning him both Filmfare Best Actor and Best Actor (Critics) awards. The film was a major hit, grossing ₹823.3 million worldwide.
In 2004, he starred in Lakshya, a coming-of-age war drama set during the Kargil War. Though the film underperformed commercially, it later gained cult status, and Roshan’s portrayal of a carefree youth transforming into a determined soldier was highly appreciated.
After a two-year hiatus, Roshan returned in 2006 with Krrish, a sequel to Koi… Mil Gaya, where he played both Rohit Mehra and the titular superhero. He trained in China with action choreographer Tony Ching, sustaining multiple injuries during filming. The movie was a blockbuster, grossing ₹1.26 billion and winning him several Best Actor awards.
That same year, he starred in Dhoom 2 as a master thief, shedding 12 pounds and training in extreme sports like skateboarding and sand surfing. His performance was lauded, and the film, grossing ₹1.5 billion, became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time. His portrayal won him another Filmfare Best Actor award.
In 2008, Roshan took on the role of Emperor Akbar in Jodhaa Akbar, a historical drama opposite Aishwarya Rai. He underwent sword-fighting, horse-riding, and Urdu training for authenticity. The film grossed ₹1.2 billion, and his regal performance won him a fourth Filmfare Best Actor award.
Following a cameo in Luck by Chance (2009), Hrithik Roshan starred in Kites (2010), playing a conman involved in a green card scam. The film opened on a record-breaking 3,000 screens and became the first Bollywood film to enter North America’s top 10. However, it underperformed in India, with critics citing its multilingual dialogues as a drawback. Roshan’s performance received mixed reviews, with some critics pointing out overacting.
Later in 2010, he collaborated with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Guzaarish, portraying Ethan Mascarenhas, a quadriplegic magician seeking euthanasia. To prepare, he spent time with paraplegic patients and trained with a magician. Despite its box-office failure, the film was critically acclaimed, earning Roshan a Zee Cine Award for Best Actor (Critics) and several nominations.
In 2011, he starred in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, playing an uptight workaholic who evolves during a life-changing road trip. The film, a major success, grossed ₹1.53 billion worldwide, with Roshan’s performance earning widespread praise. That year, he also made a cameo in Don 2.
In 2012, Roshan took on the role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Agneepath, a reimagining of the 1990 classic. Initially hesitant about stepping into Amitabh Bachchan’s shoes, he ultimately reinterpreted the character in his own way. Despite suffering a back injury during filming, Roshan delivered an intense performance. The film broke opening-day records and grossed ₹1.93 billion worldwide, winning him a Stardust Award for Best Actor in a Drama.
In Krrish 3 (2013), Roshan reprised his role in the superhero franchise alongside Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi, and Kangana Ranaut. Despite suffering an injury during production, he portrayed three different characters, earning praise for his versatility. The film grossed ₹3.93 billion worldwide, making it one of India’s highest-grossing films. He received Filmfare nominations for Krrish 3 and Bang Bang! (2014), an action comedy where he played a secret agent. While filming Bang Bang!, Roshan sustained a head injury and underwent brain surgery. Despite this, the film was a commercial success, earning ₹3.4 billion globally.
In Mohenjo Daro (2016), Roshan played a farmer from 2016 BC, undergoing rigorous training for the role. However, the film underperformed, and critics found it lacking. He rebounded with Kaabil (2017), a romantic thriller in which he played a blind man seeking revenge. His performance was widely praised, with many calling it his best. The film grossed ₹1.96 billion worldwide.
After a two-year break, Roshan returned in Super 30 (2019), portraying mathematician Anand Kumar. Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed ₹2 billion. His biggest success that year was War, an action thriller that became Bollywood’s highest-grossing film of 2019, earning ₹4.75 billion. Roshan’s performance as a rogue soldier was lauded, with critics praising his screen presence.
In Vikram Vedha (2022), Roshan played a gangster opposite Saif Ali Khan. Though well-received critically, the film struggled commercially, leading him to reconsider his future projects. He then starred in Fighter (2024) alongside Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor, undergoing martial arts training for the role. The film, though a modest commercial success, earned him praise for his emotional depth. Up next, he will headline War 2, continuing his role in the YRF Spy Universe.

Personal Life

Roshan married Sussanne Khan on 20 December 2000 in a private ceremony in Bangalore. Despite their religious differences—Roshan being Hindu and Khan Muslim—he valued her beliefs. The couple had two sons, Hrehaan (born in 2006) and Hridhaan (born in 2008). They separated in December 2013, and their divorce was finalized in November 2014, parting amicably.
In 2016, Roshan filed a lawsuit against Krrish 3 co-star Kangana Ranaut for cyberstalking and harassment. Ranaut denied the allegations and filed a counter-charge, claiming the lawsuit was an attempt to cover up an affair. The case was closed due to a lack of evidence. As of 2023, Roshan is in a relationship with actress Saba Azad.
In 2000, after an attack on his father, Roshan considered quitting the film industry. That same year, he was embroiled in controversy when Nepalese media accused him of making anti-Nepal remarks in a Star Plus interview, leading to violent protests and a ban on his films in Nepal. Roshan denied the allegations, and the situation de-escalated after he issued a written clarification, with Nepali actress Manisha Koirala helping to distribute his statement.
