About Where the Crawdads Sing Movie:
Where the Crawdads Sing is an American mystery drama film directed by Olivia Newman from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer Jr., Jojo Regina, Garret Dillahunt, Ahna O’Reilly, and David Strathairn.
Media outlets reported in March 2020 that Lucy Alibar had been hired to adapt the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ best-selling novel Where the Crawdads Sing for Hello Sunshine and the newly formed 3000 Pictures label of Sony Pictures.
Principal photography took place from March 30 to June 28, 2021, in New Orleans and Houma, Louisiana.
Where the Crawdads Sing was released in the United States on July 15, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Edgar-Jones’s performance and the cinematography, but found the film’s overall tone incoherent.
Critics commented that the film attempted to do too many things at once: it tried to pair a melodramatic tale and a legal drama, as well as telling what IndieWire called “a soulful tale of feminine self-sufficiency”, but that Edgar-Jones helped to make the film work. Slate wrote that the film departs from the book by glamorizing Kya, who always looks perfect despite her lifestyle.
Audience reception was more positive and the film became a box office success, grossing $140 million worldwide on a $24 million budget.
Mychael Danna composed the film’s soundtrack, which includes the original song “Carolina” by Taylor Swift. The song won an MTV Movie & TV Award and was nominated for various accolades, such as a Critics’ Choice Award, a Golden Globe, a Grammy, and a Satellite Award.
