About Virata Parvam Movie

Virata Parvam is a Telugu period romantic action drama directed by Venu Udugula and produced by Suresh Productions and SLV Cinemas. The film stars Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati in lead roles, with Priyamani, Nandita Das, Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao, and Sai Chand in supporting roles.

In June 2018, Venu Udugula announced his second directorial project, a period love story set in the 1990s, blending romance with politics and action. Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati were cast as the leads in November 2018, and the film was officially launched in June 2019 in Hyderabad.

Set against the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in Telangana during the 1990s, Udugula’s story draws inspiration from real-life events he witnessed growing up in Warangal. Sai Pallavi’s character, Vennela, is based on Thumu Sarala, a 16-year-old girl from Warangal district who joined the People’s War Group in 1992 but was mysteriously killed a month later. While the film is fictional, it incorporates elements inspired by this true story. Following the release, the film’s team met Sarala’s family to express their condolences.

The title Virata Parvam is derived from the fourth book of the Indian epic Mahabharata, though the film is unrelated to the epic. Udugula chose the title as it resonated with the film’s themes of politics, conspiracy, love, vendetta, and resilience.

Rana Daggubati portrays Dr. Ravi Shankar, also known as Comrade Ravanna. To fit the role, he underwent a physical transformation, reducing his weight for a leaner look. Initially, Udugula had considered Gopichand for the role before finalizing Daggubati. Priyamani was cast as Comrade Bharathakka in May 2019, and documentary filmmaker Sai Chand joined in a supporting role the same month. Originally, Tabu was part of the film, but due to scheduling conflicts, she was replaced by Nandita Das in August 2019, marking her return to Telugu cinema after Kamli (2006). Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, and Easwari Rao were also cast in supporting roles, while Nivetha Pethuraj signed on for a crucial role.

Principal photography commenced on 15 June 2019, with the first schedule filmed in Dharipally, Telangana, wrapping up on 1 July 2019. Additional schedules took place in Warangal, Kerala, and Vikarabad forests. Jaya Krishna Gummadi initially worked as the cinematographer but was later replaced by Dani Sanchez-Lopez due to scheduling conflicts. Hollywood stunt choreographer Stefan Richter was brought on for action sequences. The majority of the film was completed before production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming resumed in December 2020, with the final schedule shot in Hyderabad.

Virata Parvam was theatrically released on 17 June 2022. Although rumors suggested an OTT release in September 2020, the filmmakers denied them, confirming a theatrical release. Initially scheduled for 30 April 2021, the release was postponed due to the pandemic. The final release date was first set for 1 July 2022 but was later advanced to 17 June 2022.

Netflix acquired the post-theatrical streaming rights, and the film premiered on the platform on 1 July 2022.
