Vikram Vedha Storyline

Vikram is a ruthless, no-nonsense cop who, along with his team, is on a lookout to nab a dreaded gangster, Vedha. While Vikram sees all things as black and white, Vedha, a worldly wise man, doesn`t hold the same thinking as Vikram`s, leading to a powerful clash between the two ideologies.

About Vikram Vedha Tamil Movie

Vikram Vedha is a Tamil neo-noir action thriller directed by Pushkar–Gayathri and produced by YNOT Studios. Inspired by the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi, the film stars R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles, supported by Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Prem, Achyuth Kumar, Hareesh Peradi, and Vivek Prasanna.

Following the release of Va (2010), director duo Pushkar and Gayathri took a break from filmmaking. They aimed to explore different genres, having previously worked on comedies like Oram Po (2007) and Va. They decided to make their next film, Vikram Vedha, with a more serious tone, exploring themes like anger, hatred, and pain, and creating characters whose actions are not entirely good or evil. Initially considering settings in politics, business, or journalism, they eventually chose a police-gangster backdrop.

The story was inspired by Baital Pachisi, where the ghost-like being Vetala poses morally complex questions to King Vikramaditya. The film’s title and its characters, Vikram (Vikramaditya) and Vedha (Vetala), were derived from this tale.

In January 2015, S. Sashikanth of YNOT Studios confirmed the film’s production. Pushkar and Gayathri worked on the script throughout 2015, finalizing it in April 2016. Dhilip Subbarayan and P. S. Vinod were chosen as the stunt choreographer and cinematographer, respectively. Richard Kevin also worked as an assistant director.

In February 2016, Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi were confirmed to play the roles of an encounter specialist and a gangster, respectively. Both actors were drawn to the project due to its basis in Baital Pachisi. Madhavan, who grew a beard for the role, followed a strict diet and did not work out to lose weight, while Sethupathi sported a salt-and-pepper beard for Vedha.

Vikram Vedha was made on a budget of ₹11 crores (around US$1.66 million in 2017). Principal photography began on 16 November 2016 in Kasimedu, North Chennai, with Varalaxmi Sarathkumar joining the cast as the second female lead. The filming process took 53 days, with the climax shot over four days at Binny Mills.

The film’s official Twitter handle was launched on 30 December 2016, and its title poster was released on 2 February 2017. The teaser trailer, featuring action sequences between Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi, was released on 13 March 2017 and garnered 10 million views within 24 hours. The official trailer was launched on 22 June 2017 by Shah Rukh Khan and Sivakarthikeyan on YouTube.

In March 2018, Pushkar–Gayathri announced their plans to direct a Hindi remake of the film, also titled Vikram Vedha. The Hindi version was released on 30 September 2022. The interrogation scene from Vikram Vedha was parodied in Tamizh Padam 2.

Vikram Vedha was initially awarded an “A” certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification due to its significant amount of violence. However, the producers successfully appealed to the board, and the film was re-certified with a “U/A” rating to make it more accessible to family audiences.

The film was originally scheduled for release on 7 July 2017, but its release was delayed due to a strike by the Tamil Film Producers Council regarding the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India and the removal of the Local Body Tax by the Tamil Nadu government. After the state government reached an agreement with the Producer’s Council and set up a committee to address the issue, film screenings resumed on 6 July 2017. Vikram Vedha, along with Meesaya Murukku by Hiphop Tamizha, was then released worldwide on 21 July 2017.

R. Ravindran, under his Trident Arts banner, distributed the film in Tamil Nadu, where it was released on 350 screens across the state. ATMUS Entertainment handled the distribution of the film in the United States.
