About Wicked: For Good Movie:
Wicked: For Good is an American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. It serves as the sequel to Wicked (2024) and is the second installment of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman. The story is loosely based on the 1995 novel, which itself draws inspiration from the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum completing the main cast.
Set in the Land of Oz, the plot covers the events of the musical’s second act, exploring the deepening friendship and conflict between Elphaba and Glinda as they adopt their new identities—Elphaba as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda as Glinda the Good. Their actions set in motion transformative consequences for all of Oz.
Universal Pictures and producer Marc Platt announced the film adaptation in 2012. After extended development and delays, Chu was brought on to direct, and Erivo and Grande were cast in 2021. The decision to split the film into two parts was made to accommodate the expansive storyline and ensure no major songs or plot points were cut.
Principal photography began alongside the first film and was nearly completed by July 2023 before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike halted production. Filming resumed on January 24, 2024, and wrapped two days later. The actors’ vocals for the musical numbers were recorded live on set, a technique championed by Erivo and Grande, with Simon Hayes managing the live sound recordings, similar to the methods used in Les Misérables.
In February 2024, it was confirmed that Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore would handle the film’s visual effects, with Pablo Helman as the visual effects supervisor. Post-production was managed with innovative tools like the Apple Vision Pro, allowing Chu to work remotely with editor Myron Kerstein.
After pausing to complete post-production on the first film, editing for Wicked: For Good resumed in November 2024. The film’s title, sharing the name of the penultimate musical number from the stage show, was officially revealed on December 16, 2024.
