About Tumbbad Movie
Director Rahi Anil Barve began working on Tumbbad after hearing a story from a friend in 1993, originally written by Marathi writer Narayan Dharap. He wrote the first draft in 1997, at just 18 years old. Between 2009 and 2010, he developed an extensive 700-page storyboard to bring his vision to life.
The title of this film was derived from Shripad Narayan Pendse’s Marathi novel Tumbadche Khot. The film first went into production in 2008 with Nawaazuddin Siddiqui but got shelved as the producer backed out.
Tumbbad was initially shot during the monsoon of 2012, but after editing, Rahi Anil Barve and Sohum Shah were not satisfied with the results. The film was then re-written and re-shot, with filming finally wrapping in May 2015. Some scenes were filmed in Mahabaleshwar and the Tumbbad village. The visual effects were handled by Sean Wheelan’s team at Filmgate Films, who also served as co-producers.
The film shooting was done without any sunlight, using a Red Camera in digital format. Cinematographer Pankaj Kumar stated that the film’s entire shooting schedule revolved around lighting, emphasizing the constant rain and grey tone, which created a persistent sense of gloom and dread.
Kumar wanted the film to be shot only during the monsoon, aiming for a constant feeling of wetness so that audiences would “feel drenched” when leaving the theaters. However, due to a shortage of rainfall that year, the team had to use artificial rain and wait for hours for cloud cover to achieve the desired atmosphere.
The entire film was shot over 100 to 120 days with four shooting schedules in 2012 and 2015. The film was shot at location where people had not visited for 100 years. Sohum Shah gained 18 Kilos for his character. The film took six years to complete and he maintained his character for the same.
The film had four distinct color schemes: blue, cold grey, red, and gold to enhance its atmospheric storytelling. Since it was a period film, the filmmakers avoided modern lighting techniques, instead using 50 lanterns and lamps to achieve an authentic look.
The womb scenes were particularly challenging, taking 15 to 20 days to shoot without any visual effects. The terrifying character of Hastar was brought to life through extensive prosthetic makeup, designed by Gurpreet Singh Dhuri. Each transformation required six to seven hours of preparation, adding to the film’s meticulous production process.
Tumbbad’s initial runtime was close to 200 minutes which was edited down to 100 minutes.
In May 2023, during the re-release of Tumbbad, Sohum Shah hinted at his next project, Crazxy. He later confirmed that the film is set to hit theaters on February 28, 2025.
