Storyline

A female novelist takes a long trip to visit a bookstore run by a younger colleague who has fallen out of touch. Then she goes up a tower on her own and runs into a film director and his wife. They take a walk in a park and meet an actress, after which the novelist tries to convince the actress to make a film with her. She and the actress get something to eat, then revisit the bookstore where a group of people are drinking. The actress gets drunk and falls asleep.

About The Novelist’s Film Movie

The Novelist’s Film (Korean: 소설가의 영화) is a South Korean black-and-white drama film written, directed, produced, photographed, scored, and edited by Hong Sang-soo. The Novelist’s Film, starring Lee Hye-young and Kim Min-hee.

The film was shot for two weeks outside Seoul in March 2021 with Lee Hye-young and Kim Min-hee as the main leads. The still photos from the production site were released on April 12, 2022.

For the third consecutive year, director Hong Sang-soo competed in the main awards category at the Berlin International Film Festival. His previous films, The Woman Who Ran (2020) and Introduction (2021), were also featured in the competition section at the 70th and 71st editions of the festival.

The film premiered at Berlinale Palast on February 16, 2022. It was later screened in the Career section at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (April 19 – May 1, 2022) and at the Istanbul Film Festival on April 12, 2022.

It had a theatrical release in South Korea on April 21, 2022. The film was showcased in the Masters & Auteurs section of the 46th Hong Kong International Film Festival on August 16, 2022, and featured in the Icon section of the 27th Busan International Film Festival, where it screened on October 6, 2022.

Additionally, it was selected for the Main Slate of the 2022 New York Film Festival, held from September 30 to October 16, 2022. The Cinema Guild is set to release the film in the United States.
