The Alto Knights Storyline
The film follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.
About The Alto Knights Movie
The Alto Knights is an American biographical crime drama film about the real-life rivalry between two Italian-American mob bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, in the 1950s. The film depicts Genovese’s attempt to assassinate Costello in 1957, which ultimately leads to Costello’s retirement from the Mafia
The film is directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi. The film stars Robert De Niro in a dual role as 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. This is the first time Robert De Niro plays a dual role. It also features Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, and Michael Rispoli in supporting roles.
This is the fifth collaboration between Barry Levinson and Robert De Niro after Sleepers (1996), Wag the Dog (1997), What Just Happened (2008), and The Wizard of Lies (2017).
Originally titled Wise Guys, the film had been in development since the 1970s but was repeatedly passed over by major studios. Warner Bros. Pictures took on the project in May 2022 and officially greenlit it in August of the same year.
In October 2023, the film was re-titled Alto Knights; a trailer released on January 14, 2025, revealed the final title to be The Alto Knights.
Filming began in December 2022 in Ohio, with production temporarily closing sections of US 35 in Greene County and SR 123 in the Cincinnati area. Later, filming moved to the suburbs of Cincinnati. To create an authentic 1950s setting, vehicle vinyl wraps were used on era-appropriate cars and trucks to make them appear brand new on-screen.
