Storyline
The film Samrat Prithviraj is based on the life and heroism of the fearless and mighty Prithviraj Chauhan and superstar Akshay Kumar is essaying the role of the warrior. Historians and folk legends portray him as an incredibly brave king who stood in front of the merciless Muhammad of Ghor and his ruthless invaders of India. Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan`s daredevilry and heroism against Muhammad of Ghor catapulted him into a legendary ruler and fighter of free India.
About Samrat Prithviraj Movie
Samrat Prithviraj is a Hindi epic historical action drama film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. The film is based on the Braj language epic Prithviraj Raso, which narrates the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a king from the Chahamana dynasty. Akshay Kumar stars as the titular character, with Manushi Chhillar making her Hindi film debut as Sanyogita. The film also features Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manav Vij, Ashutosh Rana, and Sakshi Tanwar in pivotal roles.
The film’s development began in 2010 when Chandraprakash Dwivedi completed the script. Initially, Sunny Deol was the first choice to play Prithviraj, with Aishwarya Rai as Sanyogita. However, due to Deol’s date conflicts and lack of interest from production houses, the project was nearly shelved. After struggling for years to secure a producer, Yash Raj Films came onboard in 2018, reviving the project.
In March 2019, Akshay Kumar was confirmed for the lead role. The official announcement was made on his 52nd birthday (9 September 2019), accompanied by a motion poster. Sanjay Dutt, after rumors of joining the film, confirmed his role in September 2019. Manav Vij was cast as Mohammed Ghori, and Manushi Chhillar was finalized for the role of Sanyogita, replacing Aishwarya Rai. Sonu Sood and Sakshi Tanwar later joined the cast, along with Lalit Tiwari, Ajoy Chakraborty, and Govind Pandey in supporting roles.
Filming began on 15 November 2019 with a puja ceremony in Jamwaramgarh, Jaipur, Rajasthan. The production faced delays when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a nationwide lockdown in March 2020. Sets in Rajasthan were dismantled due to the high cost of maintenance during the lockdown. Filming resumed in October 2020 at YRF Studios, with Kumar, Sood, and Chhillar continuing their roles. The film wrapped up in February 2021.
The film’s budget has been reported to range from ₹150 crore (US$17 million) to ₹300 crore (US$34 million).
