Storyline
SpongeBob SquarePants’ tiniest frenemy, Sheldon J. Plankton, is finally getting his close-up. When Plankton’s latest evil scheme is thwarted, Bikini Bottom and the surface world become threatened by an unexpected danger. Now, before Plankton can take over the world, he’s going to have to save it.
About Plankton: The Movie
Plankton: The Movie is an American animated adventure comedy film directed by Dave Needham. The film is based on the television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by Stephen Hillenburg. It stars Mr. Lawrence, the voice of Plankton, alongside the rest of the series’ regular cast.
In March 2020, reports surfaced that ViacomCBS was developing two SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off films for Netflix. However, in February 2022, Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins announced during an investor call that three character-focused SpongeBob spin-off films were in production and would premiere exclusively on Paramount+, with the first scheduled for 2023. Plans later changed, and in April 2023, it was revealed that the first spin-off, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, would instead be released on Netflix in 2024.
In June 2024, it was announced that a second SpongeBob spin-off film for Netflix, titled Plankton: The Movie, was in production and would feature Plankton as its lead character.

Plankton: The Movie was released on Netflix on March 7, 2025. In China, the film was theatrically released on March 8, 2025, where it was distributed by China Film Group Corporation.
