About Paddington in Peru Movie

Paddington in Peru is a live-action animated adventure comedy film directed by Dougal Wilson (in his feature directorial debut) and written by Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont from a story by Paul King, Simon Farnaby, and Burton. It is the third installment in the Paddington film series, which are based on the Paddington stories by Michael Bond. The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Carla Tous, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington.

In June 2016, then-StudioCanal CEO Didier Lupfer confirmed the studio’s commitment to producing a third Paddington film. By November 2017, producer David Heyman shared with Digital Spy that, while a script hadn’t been developed yet, discussions about potential locations, ideas, and scenes had already started. In November 2018, Heyman hinted that a third film was likely, though Paul King would not return as director, although he would remain involved in a prominent creative role. Official development for Paddington 3 began in February 2021.

StudioCanal announced in July 2021 that filming for Paddington 3 would begin in the first quarter of 2022. The story for the film was co-written by King, Simon Farnaby, and Mark Burton, with the screenplay crafted by Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont. Inspired by the films of Werner Herzog, such as Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo, the third movie’s plot would incorporate Peru’s diverse landscapes, its rich mythology, and the culture of the rural Andes, all while blending modern elements like mobile phones and mopeds.

In June 2022, Paddington in Peru was revealed as the film’s title, and Dougal Wilson, making his feature film directorial debut after a career in commercials and music videos, was announced as director. Principal photography was slated to begin in 2023. However, in February 2023, voice actor Ben Whishaw expressed uncertainty about the film’s progress, as he hadn’t seen the script. By April, it was confirmed that the project was still moving forward.

In June 2023, it was announced that several key cast members from the previous films, including Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, and Imelda Staunton, would reprise their roles. New additions to the cast included Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, Rachel Zegler, and Emily Mortimer, the latter replacing Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown. Despite delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming began in the UK on July 24, 2023, and also took place in Colombia and Peru. Zegler, who was unable to continue due to the strike, was replaced by Carla Tous in the role of Gina Cabot. Filming concluded in October 2023.

The film includes a brief appearance by Queen Elizabeth II in the form of a framed photograph with Paddington, taken from a short film created for her Platinum Jubilee. Michael Bond, the creator of Paddington, also makes a posthumous appearance on a stamp featured in a letter Paddington receives early in the film.

Framestore provided the visual effects, while Dario Marianelli, who composed the score for the second film, returned to score Paddington 3.

To promote the film, Jo Malone released a limited edition Paddington-themed marmalade cologne in July 2024. Additionally, a series of Paddington statues were displayed across the UK and Ireland in October. In the U.S., the film is being marketed with the subtitle Paddington in Peru: Lost in the Jungle.

At the Brand Licensing Europe 2024 convention in London, StudioCanal’s CEO Françoise Guyonnet and global sales head Sissel Henno revealed plans for a fourth Paddington film and a spin-off television series. These projects, along with a West End production of Paddington: The Musical, are slated for release around the franchise’s 70th anniversary in 2027 and 2028, marking an expansion of Paddington as a global cultural phenomenon.
