About Ne Zha Movie
Ne Zha (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童降世) is a Chinese animated fantasy adventure film directed and written by Yu Yang, credited as Jiaozi. Produced by Chengdu Coco Cartoon, Jiaozi’s own studio.
The film tells the mythological origins of Nezha, who is a protection deity in Chinese folk religion, and its story is loosely based on the literary version of the myth that forms two chapters of Investiture of the Gods, a Ming-dynasty shenmo novel, traditionally attributed to Xu Zhonglin, which incorporates various existing myths into a wider narrative.
The story has been adapted for the screen many times before, at least as early as 1927 or 1928,[24] whether on its own (as in the 1979 traditionally-animated film Nezha Conquers the Dragon King) or as part of adaptations of the whole of Investiture of the Gods (such as the 2016 live-action film League of Gods).
Jiaozi spent two years crafting the screenplay, followed by three years of production. The film boasts over 1,318 special effects shots, achieved through the collaboration of more than 20 Chinese special effects studios and over 1,600 artists.
The creation of its intricate fairy tale settings, the Dragon King’s Palace, and a dramatic fire-and-water battle was an enormous technical feat, with some scenes taking months to complete.
Ne Zha Release Date
Ne Zha premiered exclusively in IMAX and China Film Giant Screen theaters on July 13, 2019, before a general release on July 26, distributed by Beijing Enlight Pictures. It became the first Chinese-produced animated feature in IMAX format and emerged as a groundbreaking success, despite being the debut feature of its director and studio and lacking star voice actors. The film shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in China and the highest-grossing non-U.S. animated film globally at the time. By August 2019, it had grossed over $725 million, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing animated film of the year and the fourth highest-grossing Chinese film of all time.
The film also marked a milestone as China’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, the first animated film from the country to earn this honor, though it ultimately did not receive a nomination.
Ne Zha began its North American release on August 29, 2019, in select IMAX 3D theaters, followed by a nationwide rollout on September 6. A sequel set in the same cinematic universe, Legend of Deification, was released on October 1, 2020, coinciding with China’s National Day. This expansion of the universe solidified Ne Zha’s legacy as a landmark achievement in Chinese animation and cinema.
