Storyline
Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs is the leader of a team of special agents belonging to the NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) Major Case Response Team. Gibbs, a former Marine, is a tough investigator and a highly skilled interrogator who relies on his gut instinct as much as evidence. Gibbs’ second in command is Senior Field Agent Tony DiNozzo, a womanizing, movie-quoting former Baltimore Homicide Detective, who despite being the class clown always gets the job done. The team also consists of probationary field agent Eleanor Bishop, a former NSA agent, as well as Junior Field Agent Timothy McGee, a computer-savvy agent often mocked by DiNozzo. Assisting them are Abby Sciuto, the energetic-but-Goth lab tech who is like a daughter to Gibbs, and Dr. Donald Mallard, nicknamed Ducky, the eccentric medical examiner full of unusual stories. This team of elite agents, based in Washington, D.C., solve criminal cases involving Marine and Navy personnel and their families, sometimes traveling the United States – or the world – to do it.
About NCIS TV Series
NCIS is an American military police procedural and the first series in the NCIS media franchise. The concept and characters were first introduced in two episodes of JAG (Season 8, Episodes 20 and 21: “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown”).
The spin-off premiered on CBS on September 23, 2003, and has since entered its 21st season, also airing in syndication on the USA Network. The series was co-created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, who also serve as executive producers.
As of 2022, NCIS is the third-longest-running scripted, live-action U.S. prime-time series, surpassed only by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999–present) and Law & Order (1990–2010; 2022–present).
Initially titled Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the show was later shortened to NCIS in its later seasons. The sixth season featured a two-part episode that led to the spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles, and another two-part episode in the 11th season resulted in NCIS: New Orleans.
Despite a slow start, with ratings barely cracking the top 30 in the first two seasons, the show grew in popularity, ranking consistently in the top 20 by the third season. In 2011, NCIS was voted “America’s favorite television show” in a Harris Poll. By the end of its 10th season, it was the most-watched TV series in the U.S. during the 2012–13 season, surpassing Gunsmoke as CBS’s longest-running scripted primetime show.
On January 5, 2024, CBS announced NCIS: Origins, a prequel, will air during the 2024–25 season, and on February 28, 2024, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, a second spin-off, was confirmed as a Paramount+ exclusive. On April 9, 2024, NCIS was renewed for a 22nd season, which premiered on October 14, 2024.
