About Madha Gaja Raja Movie

Madha Gaja Raja is a Tamil action-comedy film written and directed by Sundar C, produced by Gemini Film Circuit and Benzz Media (P) Ltd. The film stars Vishal in the lead role, alongside Santhanam, Anjali, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, and Sonu Sood, with supporting performances from Manivannan, Subbaraju, Nithin Sathya, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Munna Simon, and John Kokken.

In early 2012, Sundar C and Vishal announced their collaboration, initially planning for Vishal to portray a triple role. While there were rumors that Shruti Haasan was first considered for the female lead, Sundar hinted at signing Hansika Motwani, but scheduling conflicts prevented her from joining the project. The film was eventually titled Madha Gaja Raja, referencing Vishal’s three characters, and Karthika Nair was cast as the female lead in April 2012.

Production began in Chennai in May 2012, with an initial song sequence featuring Vishal and Sadha in an item number. However, Sundar later altered the script, reducing Vishal’s roles to a single character and introducing two female leads instead of one. This change led Karthika Nair to exit the project, citing a diminished role. Taapsee Pannu was brought in as a replacement but later opted out due to scheduling conflicts, prompting the makers to cast Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. Anjali was ultimately chosen as the primary female lead.

Filming continued across various locations, including Palani in June 2012, Jaipur in August 2012, and Hyderabad in September 2012. During a high-action sequence, Vishal sustained an injury, delaying production briefly. Meanwhile, Arya made a guest appearance, completing his scenes in a single day. The team also filmed portions in Australia before wrapping up production in January 2013, with Sundar C moving on to other projects.

Impact

Following the success of Madha Gaja Raja, theatre owner and distributor Tirupur Subramaniam confirmed that discussions were underway regarding the release of other high-profile Tamil films that had completed production but remained unreleased.

Promotional campaigns for Madha Gaja Raja began in November 2012, with an initial release planned for Pongal (mid-January 2013) under Gemini Film Circuit. However, Vishal’s other film Samar, which had faced delays, was also aiming for the same release window. To avoid a clash, Madha Gaja Raja was postponed until Samar had its theatrical run.

After nearly nine months of silence, the producers announced a new release date of 9 September 2013, aligning with Ganesh Chaturthi. However, an Australian national named Santhanam filed a court injunction against the release, claiming Gemini Film Circuit owed him six million rupees for facilitating production in Australia. At the same time, the financially strained production house had already sold the film to Vishal’s newly launched Vishal Film Factory without informing him of the outstanding payment. As a result, the High Court issued a stay order, halting the film’s release.

Vishal attempted to resolve the issue and release the film but was unsuccessful, leading him to disassociate from the project. Gemini Film Circuit reacquired the rights, while producer P. T. Selvakumar briefly considered purchasing the distribution rights and releasing the film on 7 March 2014, though the plan was abandoned. During this period, Sundar C and Vishal moved forward with another collaboration, Aambala (2015).

In November 2015, Vishal pledged to take action for the film’s release by December, but this did not materialize. Attempts to release it on 29 April 2016 also failed, leaving Madha Gaja Raja unreleased. In 2024, Sundar C expressed confusion over the prolonged delay, stating that he and Vishal had requested the production company to sell them the distribution rights. Finally, in January 2025, it was officially announced that the film would be released on 12 January during the Pongal weekend, with a Telugu-dubbed version released on 31 January 2025.
