About Downton Abbey Movie

Downton Abbey is a historical drama film based on the television series of the same name, created by Julian Fellowes, who also wrote the screenplay. Directed by Michael Engler, the film continues the story from the series and features the return of much of the original cast.

Producer Gareth Neame and Julian Fellowes began developing a feature film adaptation in 2016, soon after the Downton Abbey TV series ended in 2015 after 52 episodes. By early 2017, the script was shared with the original cast members.

The film was officially confirmed on July 13, 2018. Principal photography began in London in late August 2018 and wrapped up in November 2018.

The film’s plot is based on an actual trip by the British royals to Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire in 1912 to demonstrate the importance of the monarchy. The estate itself was used as part of the shooting locations because of the story’s link to that history.

Downton Abbey earned $96.9 million in the United States and Canada, along with $97.4 million from other regions, bringing its total worldwide box office to $194.2 million. According to Deadline Hollywood, after accounting for all expenses and revenues, the film’s net profit was estimated at $88 million.

The sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, was released in the United Kingdom in April 2022. A third film, Downton Abbey 3, is set to be released on September 12, 2025.

Downton Abbey Release Date

Downton Abbey premiered at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on September 9, 2019. It was released in the United Kingdom on September 13 and in the United States on September 20 by Focus Features. The film received generally positive reviews from critics.
