Storyline
The life of Major Mukund Varadarajan is set against the backdrop of the Qazipathri Operation in Shopian, Kashmir, which took place back in 2014.
About Amaran Movie
Amaran is a Tamil biographical war action drama film directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan, with a supporting cast including Sai Pallavi, Bhuvan Arora, Rahul Bose, Lallu, Shreekumar, Shyam Mohan, Ajaey Naga Raaman, Mir Salman, and Gaurav Venkatesh.
The film is an adaptation of the book series India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Millitary by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, which is based on Mukund Varadarajan.
The film marks the first collaboration between Sai Pallavi and Sivakarthikeyan. Sai Pallavi is set to play the role of Mukund’s wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, and will receive a remuneration of ₹3 crore.
Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures Films India, the film features music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography by CH Sai, and editing by R. Kalaivanan.
After the release of Rangoon in 2017, Rajkumar Periasamy began working on a new project, his second directorial. Sivakarthikeyan was signed on to portray Mukund Varadarajan in late December 2021.
The film was officially announced in January 2022 under the tentative title Sivakarthikeyan 21, marking his 21st film as a lead actor. The official title, Amaran, was revealed on February 16, 2024, the eve of the Sivakarthikeyan’s birthday
Principal photography began on 5 May 2023 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The shoot was temporarily halted due to the G20 summit and security concerns but resumed by 22 May. Sivakarthikeyan returned to Chennai in late May, and after a brief break, filming continued on 7 June. Production was paused on 15 July, and the schedule concluded on 27 August after 75 working days.
The second schedule began on 21 October 2023 at a film city in Chennai, focusing on a song sequence featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi. Filming wrapped up by 25 May 2024.
The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised Sivakarthikeyan’s performance, direction, screenplay, and emotional depth, as well as G. V. Prakash’s soundtrack and background score.
Amaran broke multiple box office records, becoming the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, the ninth-highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, the eighth-highest-grossing Tamil film in history, and the sixth-highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu.
The film began streaming on Netflix on December 5, 2024, in Tamil, along with dubbed versions in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
Amaran Release Date
Amaran was released worldwide on 31 October 2024, coinciding with Diwali, clashing with Brother and Bloody Beggar. It premiered in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. In the UK and other international markets, it was released with a 15 rating from the BBFC due to strong violence and language, following a 20-second cut.
The CBFC granted a U/A certification after modifying gory visuals, muting language, and correcting a map error. Initially set for 15 August, the release was postponed to 27 September before settling on 31 October 2024. A special screening was held on 24 October in New Delhi for army officials and their families.
Netflix acquired the digital rights, initially planning a November release, but due to the film’s success, it was delayed to 5 December 2024. The satellite rights were secured by Vijay TV.
