About Aang: The Last Airbender Movie
Aang: The Last Airbender is an American animated martial arts fantasy film directed by Lauren Montgomery and co-directed by William Mata. It stars the voices of Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, and Román Zaragoza.
In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced the creation of Avatar Studios during its annual Investor Day. This new division of Nickelodeon would focus on developing projects based on the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–08) and The Legend of Korra (2012–14). Series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino were appointed as co-chief creative officers, with their first project being an animated theatrical film set to begin production later that year. Konietzko, DiMartino, and original series executive producer Eric Coleman would serve as executive producers, while Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger were named producers for the film.
In June 2022, it was revealed that Lauren Montgomery, a former storyboard artist for Avatar: The Last Airbender and supervising producer for The Legend of Korra, would direct the film. By July 2022, Janet Varney, the voice of Korra, teased that the film’s plot would focus on characters from the original series. A sneak peek at the film was showcased during Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation in April 2023, confirming that the film would follow the characters into their young adulthood. In April 2024, it was reported that William Mata would join Montgomery as a co-director.
At CinemaCon 2024, Paramount announced the film’s cast, including Eric Nam as Aang, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, and Dave Bautista in a villainous role.
In October 2022, it was announced that Flying Bark Productions, based in Sydney, Australia, would handle animation for the film, combining traditional hand-drawn techniques with CGI elements. Alexia Gates-Foale, the director of production at Flying Bark, described the project as a “dream” for the studio, as many employees are passionate fans of the Avatar franchise.
