Storyline:
It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.
About 28 Years Later Movie:
28 Years Later is a post-apocalyptic horror film produced and directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. It is the third installment in the 28 Days Later series, following 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, with Boyle, Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle returning to the series. Cillian Murphy, star of the original film, serves as an executive producer.
In June 2007, Fox Atomic confirmed the development on a third 28 Days Later film, contingent on the financial success of 28 Weeks Later post-home video release. By July 2007, Danny Boyle stated that a storyline for a third installment had been outlined.
In January 2024, the development of 28 Years Later was officially announced, with plans to initiate a new trilogy. Danny Boyle would direct the first film, with Alex Garland penning the script and set to write the scripts for the subsequent sequels. Boyle, Garland, Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice serve as producers.
By February 2024, discussions about Cillian Murphy’s involvement surfaced, and MacDonald reacquired the rights to the first film from Searchlight Pictures, selling them to Sony Pictures for future distribution and sequel rights. In March 2024, Garland confirmed that he was working on a trilogy of sequels, and later cited the film Kes as a significant influence on 28 Years Later. Murphy was confirmed as an executive producer the same month.
Principal photography began on May 7, 2024, in Northumberland, with Anthony Dod Mantle as the cinematographer. Filming wrapped on July 29, 2024. Parts of the film were shot using the iPhone 15 Pro Max with specialized attachments, drones, digital cameras, and film cameras. Filming locations included Holy Island, Hexham, Kielder Forest, and various sites across the north of England and Somerset.
The first trailer, released on December 10, 2024, features the poem “Boots” by Rudyard Kipling, recited by Taylor Holmes in 1915. The trailer quickly trended on YouTube, gaining over 10 million views within 48 hours. Stuart Heritage of The Guardian highlighted the impactful use of Holmes’s spoken-word recording, calling the film “the most exciting film of 2025” based on the trailer. The trailer’s success prompted Sony to re-release 28 Days Later on digital platforms on December 18, 2024, after it had been previously unavailable due to Disney’s former distribution rights.
