About The White Lotus Season 3 TV Series

HBO announced a third season of The White Lotus on November 18, 2022, before the release of the second season. Like the first season concentrated on money and the second season on sex, series creator Mike White suggested after the second-season finale that it would be based in Asia and inspire a “satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.”

Production on the third season hit a snag due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which caused delays and ultimately pushed the release date to 2025.

When the third season was officially announced, the producers also revealed that a fresh lineup of characters would be introduced, all set in a brand-new White Lotus resort.

Variety announced in March 2023 that the third season of the show would probably be shot at a Four Seasons hotel in Thailand. Though Mike White thought about filming Honshu, Japan, Thailand was chosen for a $4. 4 million tax rebate Japan doesn’t have.

Principal photography began in February 2024 with locations including Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui and wrapped in August 2024.

Managing Thailand’s sweltering tropical heat was one of the most difficult challenges for the cast and crew on location. Everyone had to persevere in uncomfortable heat since air conditioning could not be used while the cameras were running, owing to noise. Though in reality the actors were fighting just to get by, they had to act as though they were having a stress-free holiday.

Being a late addition to the cast, Sam Rockwell filmed his scenes in one week during a break from shooting Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die in South Africa.

The third season ended up qualifying for a $550,000 tax credit from the Hawaiian government, thanks to HBO handling post-production locally. A small team of eight worked out of a timeshare unit on the island of Kauai, right across the street from creator Mike White’s home. They even set up a makeshift editing bay inside the unit to get the job done.

With more than 5 million more people watching than the second season, which averaged 15.5 million. The final episode is the series’ most-watched, with 6.2 million viewers through HBO and Max. With 2.4 million viewers to kick off the season, episodes 3 and 4 rose to 3.4 million, episode 5 climbed to 4.2 million, and episode 7 peaked at 4.8 million; data for episodes 2 and 5 is unavailable.

Ko Samui, the shooting location of the third season, experienced a 65% increase in hotel bookings and reservations since its premiere.
