Who is Lisa (Blackpink)?

Lalisa Manobal (Thai: ลลิษา มโนบาล; known mononymously as Lisa (Korean: 리사), is a Thai rapper, singer, dancer, and actress, best known as a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink. Debuting under YG Entertainment in August 2016, Lisa has since gained global recognition for her musical talent and stage presence. She is set to make her acting debut in 2025 with a role in the HBO series The White Lotus.

In September 2021, Lisa launched her solo career with the release of her debut single album Lalisa, setting a record as the first female artist in South Korea to sell 736,000 copies within its first week. The album’s title track broke YouTube records, becoming the most-viewed music video by a solo artist within 24 hours. Both Lalisa and its viral second single, Money, secured top ten positions on the Billboard Global 200, with Money making history as the longest-charting song by a female K-pop soloist on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. Notably, Lalisa became the first album by a K-pop solo artist to surpass one billion streams on Spotify, while Money achieved the same milestone as a single.

In 2024, Lisa expanded her career by founding her own management company, Lloud, and signing with RCA Records. She later released Rockstar, the lead single from her upcoming debut studio album Alter Ego (2025), which earned her first number-one spot on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart.

Recognized for her influence in the music industry, Lisa has received multiple awards, including nine Guinness World Records, a Gaon Chart Music Award, a Mnet Asian Music Award, three MTV Europe Music Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards—making her the first K-pop soloist to win at both MTV award ceremonies. She is also the most-followed K-pop artist on Instagram and the most-followed female K-pop soloist on Spotify. Honored as a cultural ambassador leader by Thailand’s Ministry of Culture, she was personally acknowledged by former Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for promoting Thai culture on a global scale.

Early Life and Education

Lisa was born Pranpriya Manobal on March 27, 1997, in Buriram Province, Thailand. She later legally changed her name to Lalisa, meaning “the one being praised,” based on a fortune teller’s advice for prosperity. Raised as an only child, she grew up with her Thai mother, Chitthip Brüschweiler, and her Swiss stepfather, chef Marco Brüschweiler. Lisa completed her secondary education at Praphamontree School I and II and is multilingual, speaking Thai, Korean, and English fluently, along with basic Japanese and Chinese.

Lisa developed an early passion for dance, enrolling in classes at age four and competing in various contests, including To Be Number One. She was a member of the dance crew We Zaa Cool, alongside BamBam of Got7. In 2009, the group won the Special Team Award on the LG Entertainment Million Dream Sanan World competition. That same year, Lisa finished as the runner-up in the Top 3 Good Morals of Thailand singing contest.

In 2010, at age 13, Lisa auditioned for YG Entertainment in Thailand, inspired by K-pop groups like BigBang and 2NE1. Out of 4,000 applicants, she was the only one selected, impressing YG’s then-CEO Yang Hyun-suk and judge Danny Im of 1TYM with her confidence and talent.

She moved to South Korea in 2011 to begin training, becoming YG Entertainment’s first non-ethnically Korean trainee on April 11. During her trainee years, she appeared as a backup dancer in Taeyang’s Ringa Linga (2013) and modeled for fashion and beauty brands, including Nona9on in 2015 and Moonshot in 2016.

Career

Lisa debuted in August 2016 as one of the four members of Blackpink, alongside Jisoo, Rosé, and Jennie, becoming the first non-ethnically Korean artist under YG Entertainment. The group’s debut single album, Square One, featured hit tracks Whistle and Boombayah, the former topping South Korean charts. In 2018, Blackpink signed with Interscope Records as part of a global partnership with YG Entertainment.

Lisa expanded her presence in entertainment by joining the military variety show Real Man 300 in 2018, earning the unofficial Character of the Year award at the MBC Entertainment Awards. That same year, she launched her YouTube channel, Lilifilm Official, focusing on travel, lifestyle, and dance, quickly amassing over a million subscribers. In 2020, one of her dance videos went viral, sparking a global meme trend with participation from celebrities like Dolly Parton and Lil Nas X. She also served as a dance mentor on the Chinese survival show Youth With You in 2020 and 2021.

In 2021, Lisa became the third Blackpink member to debut solo. Her single album Lalisa, released on September 10, broke multiple records—its title track became the most-viewed video by a soloist in 24 hours with 73.6 million views, surpassing Taylor Swift’s Me!, and earned her two Guinness World Records. The album sold 736,221 copies in its first week, making her the first female soloist in South Korea to surpass 500,000 sales in one week. The B-side track Money went viral and became the longest-charting song by a female K-pop soloist on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart.

Lisa collaborated with DJ Snake, Ozuna, and Megan Thee Stallion on SG, released in October 2021, co-writing the song and earning her first number-one on the Latin Airplay chart. In 2022, she made history as the first K-pop solo artist to win both the MTV Video Music Award and MTV Europe Music Award for Best K-Pop. By 2023, she held multiple Guinness World Records, including being the most-followed K-pop artist on Instagram and the fastest solo female K-pop act to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify.

She further expanded her artistic ventures by headlining Crazy Horse performances in Paris in September 2023. That same month, she achieved another Guinness World Record for being the first solo K-pop artist with a track reaching 1 billion streams on Spotify (Money). In November, she celebrated the milestone by appearing on Spotify’s Billions Club series, where she received a custom plaque in Paris.

On November 22, 2023, Lisa and her Blackpink bandmates were invested as Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in attendance. On December 5, YG Entertainment confirmed that Blackpink renewed their contracts for group activities while individual contracts remained under discussion. By December 29, it was announced that Lisa and the other members had chosen not to renew individual contracts with YG Entertainment.

Lisa headlined the Le Gala des Pièces Jaunes charity event in Paris on January 26, 2024, performing a medley of Lalisa and Money, and making a surprise appearance during DJ Snake’s set to perform SG live for the first time. On February 8, she launched her own artist management company, Lloud. Soon after, Variety revealed that she would make her acting debut in The White Lotus Season 3, credited under her given name, Lalisa Manobal. On April 10, she announced a partnership between Lloud and RCA Records, securing full ownership of her solo music.

Lisa began teasing new music on June 6 by launching a TikTok account, setting a Guinness World Record by gaining a million followers in just two hours and 18 minutes. On June 28, she released Rockstar, accompanied by a music video filmed in Bangkok that paid homage to her Thai heritage. The song debuted at number four on the Billboard Global 200 and topped the Billboard Global Excl. US, marking her first number-one hit on the latter. It also became her highest-charting song on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 70.

On August 16, Lisa released New Woman featuring Rosalía. The song debuted at number 15 on the Billboard Global 200 and number six on the Billboard Global Excl. US, becoming her fourth top-ten hit. It also entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 97, making her the first female K-pop soloist with four chart entries. On September 11, she performed at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the first K-pop soloist to do so. Rockstar received four nominations and won Best K-Pop, making Lisa the first solo artist to win the award twice.

Lisa headlined the Global Citizen Festival on September 28, where she premiered a new song, Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me), which was released on October 4. She performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2024 on October 15 and embarked on her Fan Meetup tour in Asia starting November 11. During the tour, she announced her debut studio album, Alter Ego, set for release on February 28, 2025. She closed the year by headlining the Amazing Thailand Countdown 2025 event in Bangkok on New Year’s Eve.

Impact

Lisa has been recognized as an influence in the K-pop industry, with artists like Gaga of Nature and Mayna of Hot Issue naming her as their role model. Her impact extended beyond K-pop when Destiny Rogers’ song Tomboy saw a 1939% surge in daily Spotify streams after Lisa featured it in a dance video, prompting Rogers to publicly thank her. Additionally, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha praised Lisa for promoting Thai culture in her Lalisa music video, which led to increased sales of traditional Thai costumes and accessories in Bangkok.

In recognition of her influence, Lisa received Thailand’s Inspirational Role Model Award in 2021 for her leadership and impact on younger generations. In 2023, she was honored with the Thailand Ministry of Culture’s Wattanakunathorn Award (Cultural Ambassador Leader) for her role in promoting Thai culture globally as a soft power.

Lisa became the most-followed K-pop idol on Instagram in April 2019 and was the first to surpass 50 million followers in April 2021. In January 2023, she earned a Guinness World Record for being the most-followed K-pop artist on the platform with 87 million followers. As of September 2021, she held the record for the most-subscribed female K-pop soloist on YouTube with Lilifilm Official, boasting 8.24 million subscribers. By August 2024, she became the most-followed female K-pop soloist on Spotify with 8.7 million followers.

Her commercial influence is evident in her fashion and beauty endorsements. Her first solo Harper’s Bazaar Thailand cover in May 2019 led to an unprecedented sellout of 120,000 copies. Following her appearance at Celine’s Men’s Spring/Summer 2020 show in Paris, searches for the brand’s Triomphe bag spiked by 66%. Her partnership with MAC Cosmetics in 2020 became the brand’s top-branded post of the year, earning recognition from Launchmetrics for its authenticity and media impact.

Lisa’s global recognition also extends into academia and cultural honors. In April 2023, researchers at Chiang Mai University named a newly discovered Thai flower species Friesodielsia lalisae in her honor. In October 2023, she was inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame, joining icons like Freddie Mercury and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Philanthropy

Lisa has actively contributed to charitable causes. In September 2019, after severe flooding affected 32 Thai provinces, she donated ฿100,000 to Thai actor Bin Bunluerit’s fund to aid evacuees.

In September 2021, Lisa supported a social program in Buriram Province, initiated by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange in partnership with YG Entertainment. The initiative aimed to construct a 160-square-meter cultural center at Non Suwan Phitthayakhom School, providing multimedia equipment and establishing a K-pop dance academy with local instructors.

In July 2024, Lisa was announced as a headliner for the Global Citizen Festival, an event dedicated to ending extreme poverty. She performed at the festival on September 28.

Personal Life

Lisa has been the subject of dating rumors with Frédéric Arnault, the CEO of TAG Heuer, and the son of Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, since early 2024. Despite frequent sightings together and social media interactions, both have remained silent about their relationship status. They have been spotted on multiple occasions, including on a luxury yacht in Italy and at BLACKPINK concerts, fueling speculation.

Lisa’s surprise performance at the Global Citizen Festival further sparked discussion, as fans interpreted her lyrics as a reference to Arnault. In January 2025, she posted an Instagram photo featuring matching couple watches with a mystery man, which many believe to be Arnault, leading to speculation of a “soft launch” of their relationship.

Despite the public interest, Lisa has maintained privacy regarding her personal life, avoiding discussions about relationships in interviews.
