When his parents, Scott (Zachary Levi) and Teresa (Meghann Fahy), learn that Austin is both autistic and has brittle bone disease, they initially worry for their son’s future. The film was written and directed by Jon Gunn. It stars Zachary Levi in the lead role alongside Meghann Fahy, Jacob Laval, Drew Powell, Gavin Warren, Amy Acker, and Patricia Heaton.
The film was announced on November 13, 2020, by the Erwin brothers. Four days later, it was revealed that Zachary Levi would star in the film. Three days after that, Jacob Laval, Meghann Fahy, Peter Facinelli, Drew Powell, Pilot Bunch, and Patricia Heaton were announced as part of the cast.
Filming for the movie began in Oklahoma during the COVID-19 pandemic in November 2020 and wrapped in December. Local casting was managed by Freihofer Casting, based in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Unbreakable Boy was released by Lionsgate in the United States on February 21, 2025. Originally set for theatrical release on March 18, 2022, the film was unexpectedly pulled from distribution just days before its release. No explanation or new date was given at the time, but in January 2024, the film was finally assigned its new release date.
