The Sound of Magic Storyline

Yoon Ah-yi, an impoverished student at Sewoon High School, has stopped believing in magic since childhood, and, after significant misfortunes, wishes to grow up faster to escape the stress of her life. She then meets Ri Eul, a magician who wants to remain a child even though he’s an adult. After being a frequent visitor of Ri Eul’s residence at an abandoned amusement park, Ah-yi’s classmate Na Il-deung, a cold and well-off student, starts to spy on her magic lessons and as a result starts to show a liking for Ah-yi and magic. Ah-yi’s life changes as she becomes a follower of Ri Eul, once again believing in magic and pursuing her dreams.

  • The Sound of Magic (Korean: 안나라수마나라) is a South Korean television series based on the Naver webtoon Annarasumanara by Ha Il-kwon, directed by Kim Seong-yoon, written by Kim Min-jeong, and starring Ji Chang-wook, Choi Sung-eun, and Hwang In-youp.
  • The series reunites director Kim Seong-yoon and writer Kim Min-jeong, who previously collaborated on the 2016 drama Love in the Moonlight.
  • Choreography was handled by Hong Se-jeong, known for his work in the musicals Phantom and Laughing Man, while illusionist Lee Eun-gyeol served as the magic advisor.
  • The music was composed by Park Seong-il, with lyrics by Kim Eana.
  • Ji Chang-wook trained in magic for three months to prepare for his role.

Yoon Ah-yi, a poor schoolgirl, works part-time and takes care of her younger sister in the absence of her bankrupt father. At school, she meets Na Il-deung, the top student who is unexpectedly beaten in mathematics by Ah-yi. She encounters a magician, Ri Eul, at an abandoned amusement park and finds hope in him to make her problems disappear.

Il-deung asks Ah-yi out on a date. Loan sharks arrive at Ah-yi’s home, demanding to know her father’s whereabouts. Il-deung later approaches her with a proposition—he offers her money in exchange for scoring lower on a math exam so he can reclaim his top rank.

Ah-yi begins learning magic from Ri Eul. Curious about her connection with the magician, Il-deung follows her to a lesson and meets Ri Eul. Meanwhile, a photo of Il-deung giving money to Ah-yi gets leaked online and spreads around the school.

Il-deung’s parents and the school spin the narrative, making it seem like he gave Ah-yi money out of generosity. Meanwhile, the police suspect Ri Eul in a missing student case. Ri Eul allows Ah-yi to meet her younger self. Baek Ha-na discovers shocking footage from the spy camera she planted in Ri Eul’s room.

Despite seeing the footage provided by Ha-na, Ah-yi continues to believe in Ri Eul. Il-deung starts questioning his own ambitions beyond his parents’ expectations. Ha-na sneaks into the amusement park but gets caught by Ri Eul. Detective Kim arrives at school and questions Ah-yi about the magician. Meanwhile, store owner Kim Doo-shik returns aggressively, and Il-deung loses control after being scolded by his parents.

Season 1, Episode 6: “The last performance”

Detective Kim and the police arrive at Ri Eul’s residence and arrest him. Ah-yi and Il-deung uncover the truth about Ri Eul’s past. During the investigation, Ri Eul mysteriously disappears, and the police later find the real culprit.
