About The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series
The Handmaid’s Tale is an American science fiction psychological thriller television series created by Bruce Miller, based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel of the same name. The series stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, and Sam Jaeger in the leading roles.
The production of The Handmaid’s Tale began in April 2016 when Hulu announced its adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel, with Bruce Miller as showrunner. Filming took place in Toronto, chosen for its resemblance to Gilead’s dystopian world. The first season of the series premiered on April 26, 2017, earning widespread acclaim for its gripping storytelling and Elisabeth Moss’s performance.
Season 1 closely followed the book, but Season 2 expanded beyond it, introducing locations like the Colonies. Season 3, filmed in late 2018, delved deeper into rebellion, while Season 4, delayed by COVID-19, saw June finally escaping Gilead. Season 5, released in 2022, explored the fallout of Fred Waterford’s death and Serena’s shifting power dynamics.
On September 8, 2022, ahead of the fifth season’s premiere, Hulu renewed the series for a sixth and final season. Originally slated to begin production in 2023, filming was delayed due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The final season officially began filming in September 2024 and wrapped up in early February 2025.
Margaret Atwood, the source novel’s author, makes a cameo as an Aunt in Offred (S1E1). She is the one who slaps June when she is reluctant to join in the group shaming circle.
