About Sardar 2 Movie
Sardar 2 is a Tamil spy action thriller film directed by P. S. Mithran and co-written with Rathna Kumar, Ashameera Aiyappan and Vignesh Muniyandi and screenplay developed by Nambi.
It is a follow-up sequel to Sardar (2022), that stars Karthi and Rajisha Vijayan reprising their roles, with S. J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath joining the cast.
Produced by S. Lakshman Kumar and Ishan Saksena under their respective banners, Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment.
After the success of Sardar (2022), the filmmakers officially announced its sequel, Sardar 2, in October 2022.
The music and background score for the film is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, marking his seventh collaboration with Karthi. This also marks his third collaboration with director P. S. Mithran, following Irumbu Thirai (2018) and Hero (2019).
Mithran began writing the script for the film by August 2023 and was reportedly completed by that December. He co-wrote the film’s script along with Rathna Kumar.
In May 2024, Pinkvilla reported that Sardar 2 is set to be the most expensive film of Karthi’s career. The sequel is expected to feature an even bigger and more relevant conflict than the first film. It’s also confirmed that the movie will be jointly produced by Ishan Saksena under IVY Entertainment.
A muhurat puja for Sardar 2 was held on July 12, 2024, at a film city in Chennai, with the cast and crew in attendance. Principal photography began on July 15, 2024, at Prasad Labs in Chennai. It was reported that 40% of the shoot was planned to take place in international locations, including Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
Casting
- Varsha Varadarajan took charge as the casting director for Sardar 2. In July 2024, soon after production began, it was confirmed that S. J. Suryah would be playing the main antagonist.
- The following month, Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, and Rajisha Vijayan were announced as the film’s female leads. Rajisha will be reprising her role as Indhrani Chandra Bose from the original movie.
- For Ashika, this project marks her third Tamil film after Pattathu Arasan (2022) and Miss You (2024). Meanwhile, since the film demands high-octane action scenes, Malavika underwent intense training and a strict diet to stay agile and flexible for her role.
- The supporting cast includes VTV Ganesh, Yogi Babu, Shah Ra, Babu Antony, O. A. K. Sundar, Sajol Ahamed, and Anbu Thasan.
Filming
- Principal photography kicked off on 15 July 2024 at Prasad Labs in Chennai.
- Just three days into filming, a tragic accident occurred — stuntman Ezhumalai fell from a twenty-foot platform while performing an action scene and sadly passed away. Following the incident, shooting was temporarily halted.
- On 25 July, the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) cancelled all shoots for a day as a mark of respect. They also organized a safety awareness meeting for film artists and technicians at Kamala Theater in Vadapalani, Chennai.
- After a brief pause, filming quietly resumed with schedules taking place across Hyderabad, Bangkok, Luton, Madurai, and Kochi.
- In early March 2025, the team moved to Mysore to film a major action sequence.
- During the Mysore schedule, actor Karthi injured his leg while performing a stunt, leading to another pause in filming.
- Producer Lakshman Kumar released a statement clarifying that Karthi had suffered a ligament tear from twisting his foot, but reassured fans that the injury wasn’t severe and that Karthi would recover with a week’s rest.
- Shooting was planned to resume in Chennai, mainly on indoor sets, before continuing in international locations.
- By late March 2025, director Mithran confirmed that 90% of the film’s shooting had already been completed.
- Post-production works commenced on 10 March 2025, and Karthi began dubbing for his portions the same day.
