In 1914, an 11-year-old Black girl, Sarah Rector, struck oil on her Oklahoma land, igniting greed and corruption. Despite adversity, she prevailed through courage and faith, becoming the wealthiest Black girl in the world.
About Sarah’s Oil Movie
Sarah’s Oil is an upcoming American biographical drama that follows the remarkable life story of Sarah Rector, who became an oil magnate at a young age. The film is based on Tonya Bolden’s 2014 book, Searching for Sarah Rector: The Richest Black Girl in America. Cyrus Nowrasteh directs, co-produces, and co-writes the screenplay for the film.
The film stars Zachary Levi, Naya Desir-Johnson, Sonequa Martin-Green, Garret Dillahunt, Bridget Regan, Kenric Green, Adyan Copes, Stelio Savante, and Mel Rodriguez.
In July 2024, principal photography began in Oklahoma, with most of the filming taking place in Okmulgee. By August, filming had officially wrapped.
The interior shots of Sarah’s guardianship hearing were filmed inside the House Building in Bristow, OK. The building was built in 1927-1928. It is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places under criterion of significance as a commerce department store. The location was formerly occupied by J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward.
