A gangster tries to avoid violence and lead a peaceful life after vowing to his wife.
About Retro Movie
In late 2021, director Karthik Subbaraj and actor Suriya started exploring the idea of teaming up for a future project. Fast forward to March 2024, the collaboration was officially confirmed under the working title Suriya 44, marking the actor’s 44th film as a lead.
By December 2024, the film got its official name: Retro. The film also features a talented ensemble cast, including Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, and Karunakaran.
The film’s principal photography kicked off on June 2, 2024, with the first schedule taking place in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The second schedule followed on July 26 in Ooty, while the final schedule began in late September in Chennai. Filming was completed on October 6, 2024.
On August 7, while filming an intense action sequence at Nawanagar Palace in Ooty, Suriya sustained a head injury. The film’s shooting was halted for a few days, as doctors advised Suriya to take a few days of rest following his injury.
The official teaser of the film was unveiled on December 25, 2024, across various social media platforms, while the trailer was released on April 18, 2025, and has garnered over 22 million views on YouTube.
Retro Movie Release Date
Retro was released theatrically on 1 May 2025 in standard and EPIQ formats. The film received highly positive reviews from critics, who praised Suriya and Hegde’s performances, Subbaraj’s direction and storytelling, music, action sequences and visuals (especially a 17-minute single shot), but the pacing and the film’s promotions as a full-fledged romantic film were criticised, as they felt the actual content did not align with the promotions.
In India, Retro was released alongside HIT: The Third Case, Raid 2, and Tourist Family. The film grossed ₹46 crore (US$5.4 million) worldwide on its opening day, including over ₹23 crore (US$2.7 million) from India and approximately ₹14–17 crore (US$1.6–2.0 million) from Tamil Nadu. It became the highest first-day grosser for the actor in Tamil Nadu, surpassing the previous record held by Kanguva (2024).
The film’s digital rights for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions are acquired by Netflix for a record price of ₹80 crore (US$9.3 million). Additionally, the Hindi digital rights were sold for ₹25 crore (US$2.9 million).
