About Moon Knight TV Series

Moon Knight is an American television miniseries created by Jeremy Slater for the streaming service Disney+, based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name.

It is the sixth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to be produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise.

Moon Knight Development

  • Moon Knight was initially planned to be introduced in the second season of Blade: The Series before its cancellation in 2006.
  • A separate Moon Knight TV series was in development in 2008, but it did not move forward.
  • James Gunn discussed a Moon Knight film with Marvel Studios in 2017 but never developed a full pitch.
  • In April 2018, Kevin Feige confirmed Moon Knight would join the MCU but did not specify a timeline.
  • Marvel Studios officially announced a Moon Knight series for Disney+ in August 2019.
  • Jeremy Slater was hired as head writer and executive producer in November 2019.
  • Mohamed Diab was brought on as director and executive producer in October 2020, emphasizing accurate Egyptian representation.
  • Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead joined as directors for two episodes in January 2021.
  • The series consists of six 40–50 minute episodes with a budget of $147.9 million.
  • Feige mentioned that Moon Knight was developed with the potential for future seasons, though it was later referred to as a limited series.
  • The show draws inspiration from Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and horror elements, aiming for a darker tone within the MCU.
  • The series explores Marc Spector’s dissociative identity disorder (DID), with a psychiatrist consultant aiding in its portrayal.
  • The character Layla El-Faouly was created as a strong Egyptian female lead, eventually taking on the mantle of Scarlet Scarab.
  • Arthur Harrow was introduced as the main antagonist instead of Bushman, with influences from other Moon Knight comic villains.
  • The show includes supernatural elements inspired by Egyptian mythology, particularly the gods Khonshu and Ammit.
  • The series is set in early 2025 within the MCU but avoids direct references to other films.
  • Plans to connect Moon Knight to Thor: Love and Thunder, Eternals, and Dane Whitman were considered but ultimately removed.
  • The setting was changed to London instead of New York to differentiate the show from other MCU projects.

Moon Knight Casting

  • Oscar Isaac entered negotiations for the lead role in October 2020 and was officially confirmed by Marvel Studios in May 2021.
  • Isaac was initially hesitant to join due to his experience with the Star Wars sequel trilogy but accepted after researching DID and receiving creative freedom from Kevin Feige.
  • His casting was expected to attract audiences unfamiliar with Moon Knight, and his Latino ethnicity allowed a broader exploration of Jewish identity.
  • May Calamawy was cast as Layla El-Faouly in January 2021 after being approached on social media by casting director Goher.
  • Ethan Hawke joined as Arthur Harrow without reading the scripts, trusting Diab and Isaac.
  • Gaspard Ulliel played Anton Mogart in one of his final roles before his passing in January 2022.
  • F. Murray Abraham voiced Khonshu, while Karim El Hakim provided the on-set performance.
  • Other main cast members include Ann Akinjirin and David Ganly as Harrow’s followers, Khalid Abdalla as Osiris’ avatar, and Antonia Salib as Taweret.
  • Additional roles were played by Sofia Danu and Saba Mubarak as Ammit (on-set performer and voice), Lucy Thackeray as Donna, and Rey Lucas as Elias Spector.
  • The cast also featured Fernanda Andrade as Wendy Spector, Saffron Hocking as Dylan, Shaun Scott as Crawley, and Díana Bermudez as Yatzil.
  • Egyptian actors played many smaller roles, including Ahmed Dash, Hazem Ehab, Amr Elkady, and Zizi Dagher.

Moon Knight Filming

  • Filming was expected to begin in March 2021 and was confirmed to be underway by April in Hungary under the working title Good Faith.
  • Diab directed the first, third, and final two episodes, while Benson and Moorhead directed the second and fourth. Each episode had its distinct voice.
  • Gregory Middleton was the cinematographer for Diab’s episodes, and Andrew Droz Palermo for Benson and Moorhead’s.
  • Filming occurred at Origo Studios in Budapest, with locations in Budapest doubling for London. Scenes were shot at the Museum of Fine Arts, Szentendre, and Madách Square.
  • Additional filming took place in Slovenia and Jordan, with one week in Wadi Rum. Shooting concluded in Budapest and Jordan by early October before moving to Atlanta.
  • The production initially wanted to film in Egypt but faced political and censorship challenges.
  • Additional photography was completed by mid-November, with minimal reshoots over four days due to extensive rehearsals.
  • Abraham joined later and experimented with different vocal takes before settling on Khonshu’s voice.
  • Editors included Cedric Nairn-Smith (episodes 1 & 6), Joan Sobel (episodes 2 & 5), and Ahmed Hafez (episodes 3 & 4).
  • Sean Andrew Faden served as the visual effects supervisor, with companies such as Framestore, Image Engine, Mammal Studios, WetaFX, and Zoic Studios contributing.
  • Weta digitally recreated large portions of Cairo, with the Giza pyramid complex being particularly challenging.
