About Michael Movie
Michael is an American biographical musical drama film depicting the life and career of legendary singer, songwriter, and dancer Michael Jackson. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film stars Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his feature film debut. The ensemble cast includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Luke.
The project was first reported in November 2019 when Graham King secured the rights to produce a Michael Jackson biopic, with John Logan attached as the screenwriter. At the time, the film had not yet been associated with a studio. In February 2022, Lionsgate officially announced its involvement, acquiring global distribution rights. In October 2023, Lionsgate revealed that Universal Pictures would handle international distribution, and by July 2024, a deal was made with Tokyo-based Kino Films to distribute the film in Japan.
Casting began in June 2023 under casting director Kimberly Hardin. Production was initially expected to start the same year, and in January 2023, Antoine Fuqua was officially announced as the director. That same month, Jaafar Jackson was confirmed to portray his uncle, while in January 2024, Juliano Krue Valdi was cast as a young Michael. Additional casting included Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller, later confirmed as John Branca.
February 2024 saw the announcement of actors portraying the remaining Jackson 5 members, followed by Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, Kat Graham as Diana Ross, Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy, Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson, Liv Symone as Gladys Knight, Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark, KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Bill Bray, and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones in March. In April 2024, Derek Luke joined the cast as Johnnie Cochran.
The screenplay will explore various aspects of Jackson’s life, including the controversies surrounding allegations of child sexual abuse. Producer Graham King emphasized the intention to “humanize but not sanitize” Jackson’s story, ensuring a compelling yet unbiased narrative.
Initially scheduled to begin filming in mid-2023, principal photography was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming officially commenced on January 22, 2024, and concluded on May 30. Dion Beebe served as the cinematographer, Barbara Ling as the production designer, and Marci Rodgers as the costume designer.
In January 2025, reports surfaced that the film’s third act would undergo reshoots due to legal restrictions preventing the depiction of Jordan Chandler, a key figure in the 1993 allegations. A production insider dismissed claims of turmoil, confirming that reshoots were scheduled for March. As of February 6, 2025, Lionsgate announced that the film was nearing completion.
Michael Movie Release Date
Michael is set for theatrical release in the United States by Lionsgate on October 3, 2025, with Universal Pictures handling international distribution, except in Japan, where Kino Films will distribute. The release was previously scheduled for April 18, 2025. A first look at the film, unveiled at CinemaCon on April 10, 2024, received a positive response from attendees.
