Lobby (Korean: 로비) is a South Korean black comedy film written, directed, and produced by Ha Jung-woo, starring Ha Jung-woo, Kim Eui-sung, Kang Hae-lim, Lee Dong-hwi, Park Byung-eun, Kang Mal-geum, Choi Si-won, Cha Joo-young, Park Hae-soo.
Ha Jung-woo developed the Lobby concept while discovering golf throughout the COVID-19 epidemic. Inspired by the isolation and exclusivity of golf clubs, where powerful people often have private chats, Ha decided to place a political satire against such a setting.
The shooting focused mostly on group images of politicians, businesspeople, and lobbyists playing golf, therefore mixing dark comedy with well compressed conversation. Ha insisted on accuracy in production, with more than twelve full cast script readings and thorough scene-specific rehearsals to guarantee rhythm and timing. Though it is a comedy, Ha directed the film deadpan, urging performers to portray their characters as though they were engaged on a high-stakes drama, therefore enhancing the satirical impact of the movie.
In seeking of realism, Ha cast Kang Hae-lim as pro golfer Jin, stressing raw presence and a real golf swing above acting credentials. Later in production, Kang Mal-geum stepped in to replace venal Minister Cho from Ra Mi-ran. To get ready for the part, she was captivated by the screenplay and first learned to play golf.
