High Potential Storyline

The show centers on Morgan, a single mother with three children who is a cleaning lady for the Los Angeles Police Department. She is also a high potential intellectual, with an IQ of 160. After figuring out a case using her unconventional mind, she becomes a consultant for the LAPD’s Major Crimes division.

A subplot involves Morgan using the LAPD’s help and resources to find out what happened to her first husband, Roman, the father of her oldest daughter Ava, who disappeared 15 years earlier when Ava was a baby.

About High Potential TV Series

High Potential is an American crime drama television series created by Drew Goddard for ABC, based on the 2021 French-Belgian series HPI.

The series was initially ordered for a pilot on September 20, 2022, with Drew Goddard writing the script. On May 16, 2023, ABC officially picked up High Potential for a full series. Goddard served as the creator and was expected to executive produce alongside Sarah Esberg, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge, Pierre Laugier, Anthony Lancret, Jean Nainchrik, and Alethea Jones, who also directed the pilot. Thomas was originally slated to be the showrunner, with Kaitlin Olson set to produce.

The production companies behind the series included Goddard Textiles, Spondoolie Productions, Itinéraire Productions, Septembre Productions, and ABC Signature. However, on June 5, 2024, Thomas stepped down as showrunner, and Todd Harthan was announced as his replacement on June 21, 2024. Harthan also joined the series as an executive producer. High Potential was the final show from ABC Signature before it was absorbed into 20th Television on October 1, 2024.

On January 21, 2025, ABC renewed the show for a second season.

The initial cast included Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Judy Reyes in starring roles. Later, on July 1, 2024, Garret Dillahunt joined the cast in a recurring role, followed by Taran Killam on August 21, 2024.

High Potential Release Date

High Potential premiered on September 17, 2024, on ABC. The series was later made available to stream on Hulu. Due to the show’s initial atypical production schedule and Kaitlin Olson’s commitment to her other series regular job on FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, ABC only ordered 13 episodes for the first season instead of a longer 20-episode season.
