Herne Katha Storyline
The series uses a documentary-style approach, often filming in natural settings without scripted dialogue or heavy production. It employs a minimalist and raw aesthetic, using everyday conversations, local dialects, and real-life footage to capture the essence of life in Nepal’s rural and urban areas. The filmmakers travel across the country to meet the subjects in their homes, workplaces, or environments, allowing the audience to witness their lives up close.
About Herne Katha Web Series
Herne Katha is a Nepali web documentary series showcasing stories from underrepresented communities in Nepal. The name Herne Katha, which translates to “Stories to be watched” in English, signifies its mission to highlight such narratives. The series celebrates Nepal’s diverse socio-economic and cultural landscape.
Herne Katha was co-founded by Bidhya Chapagain and Kamal Kumar, premiering on YouTube in March 2018. It features stories of individuals and communities from various parts of Nepal.
New episodes of Herne Katha are released twice a month, on the 1st and 15th of the English calendar, at 9 PM, on YouTube ‘Herne Katha‘. Currently, the series is not broadcast on any television channel but may consider doing so in the future based on audience demand.
Themes and Subjects
Herne Katha’s subjects span a wide range of social, cultural, and economic issues. Some of the prominent themes covered include:
- Migration and Remittance: Many episodes feature stories of Nepali migrants working in foreign countries, highlighting their personal and familial struggles.
- Gender and Social Justice: The series also showcases the stories of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals challenging traditional gender norms.
- Indigenous Communities: Herne Katha has focused on the unique cultures and challenges of Nepal’s indigenous groups, such as the Tharu, Tamang, and Chepang.
- Poverty and Livelihoods: A significant portion of the stories highlight people struggling to make a living in Nepal’s challenging economic environment, particularly those in agriculture, labor, and informal sectors.
- Human Rights and Activism: The show features activists and ordinary citizens advocating for rights, land reforms, and environmental protection.
Collaborations and Funding
Unlike traditional media outlets, Herne Katha operates independently, primarily funded through audience contributions and crowdfunding.
