In the lonesome boat sailing through mystical overflowed landscapes, they navigate the challenges and dangers of adapting to this new world.
About Flow Movie
Flow (Latvian: Straume) is an animated fantasy adventure film directed by Gints Zilbalodis and co-written by Zilbalodis and Matīss Kaža. The dialogue-free narrative follows a cat, dog, capybara, and ring-tailed lemur navigating a post-human world as rising waters threaten their survival.
The film’s origins trace back to Aqua (2012), a short film by Zilbalodis about a cat overcoming its fear of the ocean, which later served as the foundation for Flow. Initially using Maya for animation, Zilbalodis transitioned to Blender in 2019, leveraging its real-time renderer, EEVEE.
Production began in 2019 and spanned five and a half years. Inspired by Jacques Tati and the anime Future Boy Conan, Flow was developed without storyboards—Zilbalodis instead positioned the characters within scenes and explored them dynamically with the camera. He based the cat and dog on his own pets, while the capybara, lemur, and secretarybird were studied from zoo observations. The whale initially had a realistic design but was later stylized into a mythical creature. Similarly, the secretarybird was originally conceived as a seagull but was changed due to its small size. The boat used by the characters drew inspiration from Mediterranean feluccas.
In 2022, Take Five and Sacrebleu Productions joined the project, contributing to character animation and sound. During development, Flow was showcased at the 2022 Cartoon Movie forum in Bordeaux. The film received financial backing from the National Film Centre of Latvia, the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia, the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, ARTE France, Eurimages, RTBF, and the Belgian Tax Shelter. Animation was completed in France and Belgium, using Blender.
Zilbalodis composed seven hours of music for the film, with 50 minutes making it into the final cut. Sound designer Gurwal Coïc-Gallas incorporated real animal sounds for each character, except for the capybara, whose real-world sounds were deemed too high-pitched; instead, baby camel sounds were used. Coïc-Gallas’s cat, Miut, provided the voice for the film’s feline protagonist.
A board game adaptation of Flow was released in January 2025.
