Eric Larue Storyline

In Eric Larue, Janice is coping with the fallout after her son murders three of his high school classmates. Struggling and moving through life as if in a haze, she is unable to let go of her anger and frustration. While her husband has found refuge at a new church, Janice finds it hard to seek solace in her faith despite her pastor’s pleas to heal her wounds by meeting with the mothers of her son’s victims. As Janice ponders what that meeting could achieve for her and her community, Eric Larue asks audiences to witness the frayed emotional ripples that violent acts can engender.

Eric Larue is an American drama film based on his 2002 play of the same name. It is directed by Michael Shannon in his directorial debut and written by Brett Neveu. The film stars Judy Greer, Paul Sparks, Alison Pill, Tracy Letts, Annie Parisse, and Alexander Skarsgård.

The play Eric Larue, written by Brett Neveu, premiered in 2002 at Chicago’s A Red Orchid Theatre, co-founded by Michael Shannon. Neveu originally wrote the play in response to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. In February 2018, while Shannon was directing another play by Neveu, a mass shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This tragic event led to the decision for Neveu to adapt Eric Larue into a screenplay.

Michael Shannon was officially announced as the director in July 2022. That same month, the film’s cast was revealed, including Judy Greer, Paul Sparks, Alison Pill, Tracy Letts, Annie Parisse, Kate Arrington, and Alexander Skarsgård.

Filming was originally scheduled to take place in Little Rock, Arkansas, from August 8 to September 5, 2022. However, due to an Arkansas state law banning nearly all abortions, including in cases of rape and incest, the production decided to relocate. Instead, filming took place in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. In August 2022, locations in Wilmington included Elderhaus, St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church, and New River Pottery, among others. Filming was completed before mid-September 2022.

Eric Larue had its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival on June 10, 2023. The film was released in the United States on April 4, 2025.
