Early Life & Education

Megan Denise Fox was born on May 16, 1986, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to Gloria Darlene (née Cisson) and Franklin Thomas Fox. She spent her early years in Rockwood, Tennessee. Her parents divorced when she was three, and her mother later remarried Tony Tonachio. Fox and her sister were raised in a strict household, following Pentecostal beliefs before attending Catholic school for 12 years. She described her upbringing as highly disciplined, with strict rules prohibiting boyfriends and social visits. She has also spoken about experiencing verbal and emotional abuse from her stepfather until his passing. During her teenage years, Fox struggled with an eating disorder and manic depression, which she attributed to a family history of chemical imbalances. She lived with her mother until she became financially independent.
Fox started training in dance and drama at the age of five in Kingston, Tennessee. She participated in community dance classes, school chorus, and a swim team. At 10, she moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she continued her training. At 13, she began modeling, winning multiple awards at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She attended Morningside Academy in Port St. Lucie before transferring to St. Lucie West Centennial High School. At 17, she tested out of school through correspondence to pursue her career in Los Angeles.
Fox has openly discussed her school years, recalling being bullied in middle school to the point where she ate lunch in the bathroom to avoid harassment. She attributed the hostility to her preference for male friendships, which alienated her from other girls. She described herself as an outcast, stating that she was never popular and had only one close female friend. Additionally, she expressed her disinterest in formal education, feeling that the curriculum was irrelevant and disengaging.
Career
Megan Fox made her acting debut in 2001 as Brianna Wallace in Holiday in the Sun, a direct-to-DVD romantic comedy. Over the next few years, she guest-starred in sitcoms like What I Like About You and Two and a Half Men, and had an uncredited role in Bad Boys II (2003).
Her feature film debut came in 2004 when she played Carla Santini, a rival to Lindsay Lohan’s character, in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. That same year, she joined ABC’s sitcom Hope & Faith as Sydney Shanowski, remaining on the show until its cancellation in 2006.
In 2007, Fox landed her breakout role as Mikaela Banes in Transformers, playing the love interest of Shia LaBeouf’s character. The film was a massive success, earning her nominations for an MTV Movie Award and three Teen Choice Awards. She reprised her role in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), though controversy arose when director Michael Bay asked her to gain weight for the role. Despite its mixed reviews, the sequel was a box office hit. However, she did not return for the third installment, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, after publicly comparing Bay to Hitler, a remark that reportedly led to her firing, though Steven Spielberg denied involvement.
In 2009, Fox took on her first leading role in Jennifer’s Body, written by Diablo Cody. Initially receiving mixed reviews, the film was later reevaluated as a feminist cult classic. That same year, she starred in Jonah Hex (2010) as Tallulah Black/Leila, though she described her role as more of a cameo. The film was a critical and commercial failure, earning the title of “worst picture of the year” from the Houston Film Critics Society.
Megan Fox starred alongside Mickey Rourke in the drama Passion Play, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival but was ultimately released direct-to-video, with only a limited theatrical run to meet contractual obligations. Rourke later criticized the film, calling it “terrible.” In 2010, Fox appeared with Dominic Monaghan in the music video for Eminem and Rihanna’s Love the Way You Lie.
In 2012, she had a cameo in Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator and played a supporting role in Judd Apatow’s comedy This Is 40. She also voiced Lois Lane in the animated Robot Chicken DC Comics Special, which aired on Adult Swim. The following year, she starred in a Brazilian commercial for Brahma beer.
Fox reconciled with director Michael Bay in 2013 and played April O’Neil in his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot (2014). She reprised the role in its 2016 sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In between, she voiced a character in the video game Stormfall: Rise of Balur (2015) and temporarily replaced Zooey Deschanel in New Girl, playing Reagan Lucas in seasons five and six—a performance that received positive reviews.
In 2018, Fox starred in the Korean War film The Battle of Jangsari, playing journalist Marguerite Higgins alongside Korean actor Kim Myung-min. The following year, she starred in Above the Shadows (2019), a mystery-fantasy film, and appeared in James Franco’s Zeroville (2019), a long-delayed project originally filmed in 2014. Zeroville was critically panned and flopped at the box office.
In 2020, Megan Fox starred alongside Josh Duhamel in the family comedy Think Like a Dog, which was released via video on demand. She also took on the lead role in the action film Rogue, released in August of the same year.
In 2021, she appeared in two thrillers: Midnight in the Switchgrass, opposite Emile Hirsch and Bruce Willis, and Till Death, a survival thriller directed by S.K. Dale.
The following year, Fox starred in the dark comedy Big Gold Brick, alongside Oscar Isaac and Andy García, and played a role in the musical drama Taurus with Machine Gun Kelly.
In 2023, she appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and portrayed crime boss Alana in the thriller Johnny & Clyde. That same year, she played Gina in Expend4bles and voiced Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1.
In November 2023, Fox made her literary debut with Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, a poetry collection featuring her personal reflections.
Personal Life
In 2009, Megan Fox was targeted by the “Bling Ring,” a group of fashion-driven criminals who robbed the home of her then-boyfriend, Brian Austin Green, in search of her possessions.
Fox has spoken about the importance of her Christian faith, stating in 2013 that it keeps her grounded. She and Green supported Generosity Water, funding over ten water wells for the organization.
Regarding relationships and sexuality, Fox has expressed distrust toward men and described herself as asocial, preferring to stay home rather than attend social events. She has stated she cannot have casual relationships and has identified as bisexual, believing that all humans are capable of attraction to both sexes. She has also acknowledged the impact she has had on others in the LGBTQ+ community, calling it one of the most rewarding aspects of her public life.
Fox has several tattoos, including literary quotes, symbols, and personal phrases. Some notable ones include a Shakespearean quote from King Lear, a Nietzsche quote, and a poetic verse on her ribs. She has removed her Marilyn Monroe tattoo, citing a desire to avoid negative energy, and covered a tattoo of Green’s name. Her body art also includes floral designs, a snake on her abdomen, and smaller symbols across her fingers.
Relationships

Megan Fox began dating actor Brian Austin Green in 2004 after meeting on the set of Hope & Faith. At the time, she was 18, and he was 30, with Green initially hesitant due to the age difference. Fox later admitted that she had “fallen in love with other people all the time” throughout their relationship.
The couple got engaged in 2006, briefly called it off in 2009, but reconciled and married on June 24, 2010, in Hawaii. They have three sons, born in 2012, 2014, and 2016, and Fox also became a stepmother to Green’s son from a previous relationship. She filed for divorce in 2015 but reconciled in 2016. In 2020, Green announced their separation, and Fox filed for divorce again in November. Their divorce was finalized on October 15, 2021.
