The Intern was originally set up at Paramount Pictures, with Tina Fey and Michael Caine lined up for the lead roles. Later, the project moved to Warner Bros., where Reese Witherspoon was brought on to replace Fey. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Witherspoon had to step away from the film on January 15, 2014.
Just a few weeks later, on February 7, 2014, Anne Hathaway entered final talks to take over the lead role. Stephen Goldblatt was brought on as the director of photography, and by June 23, 2014, Zack Pearlman had also officially joined the cast.
Principal photography began on June 23, 2014, in Brooklyn, New York City, where De Niro was spotted on the set of the film. On October 2, 2014, director Nancy Meyers announced that filming was completed.
