About Vikings: Valhalla TV Series
Vikings: Valhalla, or simply Valhalla, is a historical drama television series created by Jeb Stuart for Netflix that acts as a sequel to Vikings.
In addition to the news that Vikings would conclude after its sixth season, Michael Hirst and MGM Television announced on January 4, 2019, that they were working with writer Jeb Stuart to create a spin-off series. It was revealed on November 19, 2019, that the Netflix series, Vikings: Valhalla, would be set a century after the conclusion of the first series.
MGM Television produced the 24-episode series, which was mostly shot in Ireland at the same Ashford Studios in County Wicklow. “The exploits of Leif Erikson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir, and Harald Sigurdsson” are the main focus of the series.
The show was formally renewed for a second and third season on March 9, 2022. The second season’s January 12, 2023 launch date was revealed on November 21, 2022. It was revealed on June 12, 2024, that the third and last season would debut on July 11, 2024.
The series was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode at the 21st Visual Effects Society Awards.
The casting of David Oakes, Frida Gustavsson, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson for the series was announced in November 2020. Jóhannesson was cast as Olaf Haraldsson, although previous reports said that he had been cast as Harald Sigurdsson, a role that was later given to Leo Suter. Gustavsson was then discovered to have been cast as Freydís Eiríksdóttir and Oakes as Godwin. As Leif Erikson, King Canute, Queen Emma, and Jarl Estrid Haakon, respectively, Sam Corlett, Bradley Freegard, Laura Berlin, and Caroline Henderson completed the core cast. Asbjørn Krogh Nissen and Pollyanna McIntosh were chosen to play Queen Ælfgifu and Jarl Kåre in supporting parts.
It was revealed in May 2022 that Florian Munteanu would play General Georgios Maniakes in the third season. It was also revealed in June that Goran Višnjić would play Erik the Red in the third season. Bradley James as Lord Hárekr, Hayat Kamille as Mariam, Marcin Dorocinski as Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Sofya Lebedeva as Eleana, Tolga Safer as Kurya, and Stanislav Callas as Jorundr were among the new cast members for the second season that were revealed in November.
Showrunner Jeb Stuart’s writing team includes Vanessa Alexander, Declan Croghan and Eoin McNamee. The first episode was directed by Niels Arden Oplev.
Filming for Vikings: Valhalla began in October 2020 at Ashford Studios in Wicklow, the same location used for the production of the first season, Vikings. After several positive COVID-19 tests, the shooting was halted, but it was resumed a few days later. Several members of the cast and staff were said to have tested positive at the time, but it turned out that the production had gotten a lot of false positives. BAFTA-winning Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev, Steve Saint Leger, who helmed multiple Vikings episodes, and Hannah Quinn were among the directors of the first season.
Later, in August 2021, filming got back underway at Ashford Studios, and the second season’s production was completed in November of the same year. The third season’s production started in May 2022 and ended in October of the same year.
Vikings: Valhalla, a mobile strategy game developed by Emerald City Games, was released on iOS and Android on September 7, 2023, and requires an active Netflix subscription to play.
