About Nosferatu Movie

Nosferatu is a chilling reimagining of the 1922 silent classic, helmed by Robert Eggers. This gothic horror film is a modern retelling of F.W. Murnau’s iconic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which itself is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying Count Orlok, with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp portraying Thomas and Ellen Hutter. The stellar supporting cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

In 2015, the project was officially announced, with Eggers attached as both writer and director. Initially planned as his second film, Eggers expressed discomfort at tackling such a legendary story, calling it “ugly and blasphemous” yet inevitable. By 2019, after significant delays, Eggers continued to express his hope that the project would come to fruition, despite the challenges.

Casting changes marked the journey: Anya Taylor-Joy was initially involved, having previously worked with Eggers on The Witch (2015), but eventually exited, with Harry Styles stepping in briefly before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts in 2021. After much deliberation, Eggers cast Skarsgård, originally considered for Thomas Hutter, to play the sinister Count Orlok. Depp replaced Taylor-Joy in the role of Ellen, and Hoult was confirmed as Thomas Hutter shortly afterward.

The cast continued to expand, with Willem Dafoe joining in early 2023, reuniting with Eggers after The Lighthouse (2019) and The Northman (2022). Dafoe had previously portrayed Orlok in Shadow of the Vampire (2000) and was initially slated to reprise the role for Eggers. Additional cast members, including Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Simon McBurney, and Ralph Ineson, were announced throughout early 2023. Even Romanian TikTok star Bunica Gherghina appeared as an elderly woman at a Transylvanian inn. Notably, the film features around 5,000 trained rats, adding an extra layer of horror to the proceedings.

Principal photography began in February 2023 in the Czech Republic, with some breathtaking locations such as Rožmitál pod Třemšínem Castle and Prague’s Invalidovna complex. Exterior shots were captured at Romania’s Corvin Castle. The film was shot on 35mm film, with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke using special filters to achieve a hauntingly desaturated aesthetic.

To embody Count Orlok, Skarsgård underwent a drastic physical transformation, shedding significant weight and working with Icelandic opera singer Ásgerður Júníusdóttir to deepen his vocal range, incorporating Mongolian throat singing to enhance the character’s eerie presence. Skarsgård also endured up to six hours of prosthetic makeup each day, a process he described as “conjuring pure evil.” Hoult, too, experienced a chilling moment when the crew had to restrain wolves during tense chase scenes.

The film’s production was meticulous, with custom-made props, some of which were kept by the actors. Eggers even gifted Depp Ellen’s locket, and Hoult kept a framed piece of Orlok’s prosthetic costume as a memento. One of the most memorable sequences—the arrival of Hutter in a Transylvanian village—was filmed in a single take, featuring nonprofessional actors, musicians, and dancers. The set design was influenced by Romania’s traditional architecture, meticulously researched by the crew.
