About Chhaava Movie
Chhaava is a Hindi historical action film directed by Laxman Utekar, based on the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, portrayed by Vicky Kaushal. The film is an adaptation of the acclaimed Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, which also inspired the film’s title. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna.
In December 2022, reports surfaced that Laxman Utekar was working on a historical biopic. After finalizing the script in January 2023, pre-production began in April 2023. Filming commenced in October 2023 and concluded in May 2024.
Director Laxman Utekar and his team dedicated a year to researching the 17th-century Maratha era, visiting historical towns such as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Ratnagiri, Pune, Nashik, and Paithan. Costume designer Sheetal Sharma sourced authentic Paithani sarees and meticulously restored 500-year-old borders to craft the look for Rashmika Mandanna’s character, Yesubai.
The film was officially announced on October 3, 2023, by Maddock Films. The teaser of the film was showcased before the preview shows of Stree 2 and was later released on social media on August 19, 2024, coincidwith ing Raksha Bandhan.
Akshay Khanna and Vicky Kaushal avoided talking to each other on the sets in order to get into their characters on screen.
Neelkanti Patekar returns to acting after nine years after the Marathi film Bernie (2016).
Vicky Kaushal followed a strict 6,000-calorie daily diet throughout the film’s schedule to build muscle mass. He described it as the most challenging aspect of the project. To portray Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, he gained 20-25 kg of muscle.
Chhaava Movie Release Date
Chhaava was released theatrically on February 14, 2025. Initially, the film is set for release on December 6, 2024.
Following backlash from certain Maharashtrian political figures for featuring a scene in the trailer in which Sambhaji and his wife perform lezim dance, Utekar decided to delete the sequence from the film.
The film’s digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix and released on Friday, 11 April 2025.
