About Babygirl Movie
In November 2023, it was revealed that David Hinojosa of 2AM would produce an upcoming project, alongside Halina Reijn of Man Up Films, with A24 providing financing. Julia Oh, Zach Nutman, and Christine D’Souza Gelb of 2AM were set to serve as executive producers. However, it was later clarified that Oh would step into a producer role, contrary to earlier reports. Reijn not only produced the film but also directed it, working from her own screenplay. This marked Reijn’s second English-language feature film, both backed by A24.
The film draws inspiration from classic thrillers like Indecent Proposal and Basic Instinct, with its workplace dynamics playing a central role. Set in an American office, the affair depicted in the film is made more taboo by the stricter hierarchy and rules in U.S. workplaces, as opposed to Europe.
Reijn was inspired to write the script after learning of a woman who had never experienced an orgasm in her 25-year marriage. She expressed that exploring women’s relationships with their bodies was a major driving force behind the project. Reijn also cited her love for the erotic thrillers of the 1980s and 1990s, especially those by directors Paul Verhoeven and Adrian Lyne, as key influences on the film’s direction. Lizzy Talbot was brought on board as the intimacy coordinator.
While the original plan was to release the film in the summer, production delays caused by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes led to a shift in the release schedule, pushing the film to Christmas.
In November 2023, Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, and Jean Reno were announced as the film’s stars. The supporting cast includes John Cenatiempo, Vaughan Reilly, Victor Slezak, Anoop Desai, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, and Esther McGregor.
Principal photography began in December 2023 in New York City, wrapping up in February 2024.
