Ne Zha 2 (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童闹海), the sequel to the 2019 animated blockbuster Ne Zha, has made history at the box office, setting unprecedented records both in China and globally. In just three days after its release in China, the film’s box office revenue reached 1.1 billion yuan, making it the first movie to earn 1 billion yuan (US$137 million) during the 2025 Chinese New Year period. By the fourth day, the box office surpassed 2 billion yuan, and on the fifth day, it exceeded 3 billion yuan. On the sixth day, the film crossed 4 billion yuan, setting a new record for the fastest to reach that milestone, breaking the previous record held by Detective Chinatown 3 in 2021, which took 9 days and 9 hours. By the eighth day, the box office crossed 5 billion yuan (US$684 million), surpassing The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021), which had set the previous 5 billion yuan record after 19 days and 9 hours. It also surpassed the total box office of the first Ne Zha film, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in mainland China. The Ne Zha series became the second film series to exceed 10 billion yuan (US$1.37 billion) with just two movies. On the ninth day of release, the box office hit 6 billion yuan.
As of 8 February 2025, the box office has surpassed 7.2 billion yuan, making it the highest-grossing film of the Chinese New Year period. It has overtaken Wolf Warrior 2 (2017) and The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021) to become the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. By 8 February, it also became the 63rd film worldwide to surpass 7 billion yuan (US$958 million), making it the first non-Hollywood film to achieve this feat. Additionally, it surpassed the single-territory box office record of US$936.7 million set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) just 11 days into its release. The film also became the highest-grossing animated movie, exceeding the lifetime total of Inside Out 2 (2024) in less than three weeks. This marks the first time a non-American, non-English-language animated film has reached this milestone, and it is only the second non-Disney animated film to do so, following Shrek 2 (2004), which was the highest-grossing film of its year.
At its Los Angeles premiere on 12 February, tickets at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre sold out immediately. The film grossed $7.2 million in its opening weekend in the U.S., a significant jump from its predecessor’s $1.2 million opening weekend.
